Tsereteli Casts Europe's Highest Statue of Christ in Bronze

Moscow, July 30, Interfax - Prominent sculptor Zurab Tsereteli has cast a statue of Jesus Christ which, when set up, may become the highest statue of Christ in Europe.

It was cast in St. Petersburg and is 33 meters high - as many meters as the years Christ lived on Earth, and its pedestal is another 50 meters high, which, overall, makes it 83 meters tall, the sculptor said.

He also said that the sculpture will be five meters taller than the statue of Christ in Lisbon, believed to be the highest in Europe.

Tsereteli said he had been offered to place the monument on a Caucasus summit in Georgia. "But I hope it will find a place in Russia. I have no doubts," Tsereteli said.

Tsereteli is president of the Russian Academy of Arts and is a prominent sculptor. His monuments can be seen in many countries.

I think that the translation software has burbled here. Highest, I think, should be tallest, unless it is going on some mountain somewhere.

Wow, sort of like Nebuchadnezzar’s big ol’ idol.

As a follower of Jesus, I wish there were no Jesus statues in the whole world. Such a low view of who he is.

How can anyone make a statue of Jesus when no one knows what he looked like?

The 4th commandment - 4 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Whatever is old is new again:

"..[W]ith regard to images we must manifest the truth, and take into account the intention of those who make them. If it be in very deed for the glory of God and of His saints to promote goodness, to avoid evil, and save souls, we should receive and honour and worship them as images, and remembrances, likenesses, and the books of the illiterate. We should love and embrace them with hand and heart as reminders of the incarnate God, or His Mother, or of the saints, the participators in the sufferings and the glory of Christ, the conquerors and overthrowers of Satan, and diabolical fraud. If any one should dare to make an image of Almighty God, who is pure Spirit, invisible, uncircumscribed, we reject it as a falsehood. If any one make images for the honour and worship of the Devil and his angels, we abhor them and deliver them to the flames. Or if any one give divine honours to the statues of men, or birds, or reptiles, or any other created thing, we anathematise him. As our forefathers in the faith pulled down the temples of demons, and erected on the same spot churches dedicated to saints whom we honour, so they overturned the statues of demons, and set up instead the images of Christ, of His holy Mother, and the saints. Even in the old dispensation, Israel neither raised temples to human beings, nor held sacred the memory of man. At that time Adam's race was under a curse, and death was a penalty, therefore a mourning. A corpse was looked upon as unclean, and the man who touched it as contaminated. But since the Godhead has taken to Himself our nature, it has become glorified as a vivifying and efficacious remedy, and has been transformed unto immortality. Thus the death of the saints is a rejoicing, and churches are raised to them, and their images are set up.

Be assured that any one wishing to pull down an image erected out of pure zeal for the glory and enduring memory of Christ, or of His holy Mother, or any of the saints, to put the devil and his satellites to shame,--anyone, I say, refusing to honour and worship this image as sacred--it is not to be worshipped as God--is an enemy of Christ, of His blessed Mother, and of the saints, and is an advocate of the devil and his crew, showing grief by his conduct that the saints are honoured and glorified, and the devil put to shame. The image is a hymn of praise, a manifestation, a lasting token of those who have fought and conquered, and of demons humbled and put to flight.
-St. John Damascene, Apologia Against Those Who Decry Holy Images, 8th century A.D.

I Kings 6:23-36; 7:27-39; 8:6-67 - Solomon’s temple contains statues of cherubim and images of cherubim, oxen and lions. God did not condemn these images that were used in worship.

2 Kings 18:4 - it was only when the people began to worship the statue did they incur God’s wrath, and the king destroyed it. The command prohibiting the use of graven images deals exclusively with the false worship of those images.

1 Chron. 28:18-19 - David gives Solomon the plan for the altar made of refined gold with a golden cherubim images. These images were used in the Jews’ most solemn place of worship.

2 Chron. 3:7-14 - the house was lined with gold with elaborate cherubim carved in wood and overlaid with gold.

Ezek. 41:15 - Ezekiel describes graven images in the temple consisting of carved likenesses of cherubim. These are similar to the images of the angels and saints in many Catholic churches.

Col. 1:15 - the only image of God that Catholics worship is Jesus Christ, who is the “image” (Greek “eikon”) of the invisible God.

What you two are arguing about is the remnants of Iconoclasm. This arose first in 730 AD in the Byzantine Empire when they lost to the Moslems -- this entire Iconoclastic movement is Islamic in origin

The Patriarch of Constantinople etc. pointed out that Jesus is God incarnate in visible matter, therefore the icons etc. are not depicting invisible God but God as He appeared in the flesh, so the icons depict a real person.

also note that Moses had created golden statues of cherubim on the lid of the Ark (ex 25:18-22)and the curtain which separated the Holy (EX 26:31)of Holies

Many have seen Him, now, and our recent past, by the living and breathing among us. He has shown Himself to many, as has Saint Mary, His/our Holy Mother, Queen of Heaven, as She did with the Fatima girls and with the girls at Garabandal.

Such discernment is a Gift from Him. He is our Teacher and to discern Him is one of the things He teaches. There is so much we have closed our selves off from in what Jesus called our "era of no faith at all" on March 17, 1988.

You apparently misread my post. I am not making a case for iconoclasm. I am simply asking how one can make a statue of Jesus when there's no description in the Bible as to what he looked like.

How is it that iconoclasm is Islamic in origin? In AD 730, when you say that it arose, the Roman Empire was ruled by the emperor Leo III, who defeated the Muslims.
