Pope Francis and Gays: “Loving the Sinner” Is Still Intolerance (Thanks for clarifying that, Time)
Time ^ | July 30, 2013 | Tim Padgett

Posted on 07/30/2013 11:25:09 AM PDT by Mrs. Don-o

It's hardly surprising that the world, especially Roman Catholics like myself, is breathlessly decoding what Pope Francis told reporters on his flight back to Rome from Brazil on Monday regarding homosexuality: “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?”

The Pope’s remarks... hardly represent a break with Catholic church doctrine, which still condemns homosexuality. The Vatican’s catechismal stance regarding the LGBTs in our midst remains the same: The church may love the sinner, but it hates the sin. And since Francis was referring specifically to gay priests—who like other Catholic clerics take a vow of celibacy and so don’t commit the “sin”— His Holiness wasn’t exactly going out on a theological limb.

But at a time when the world is increasingly accepting gay rights and even gay marriage, here ‘s what’s really significant about the Pope’s statement: The love-the-sinner-but-hate-the-sin trope no longer carries much if any moral credibility.

How—given our awareness today that homosexuality is as biological as heterosexuality, and that homosexual relationships have proven as valid and socially enriching as straight ones— can we take any religious leader seriously when he claims to love gay people but at the same time demonizes the consummation of their love for each other?

How, for example, can the Catholic church declare homosexuals “disordered” and their lifestyle an “intrinsic moral evil,” yet expect us to applaud its “love” for gays somewhere beneath all that homophobic bigotry?

My mother was born in Mississippi and has often told me of Southern whites in the mid-20th century insisting they could love a black person even if they hated the black race. No, you can’t .... When he was Archbishop of Buenos Aires he called Argentina’s legalization of gay marriage a “grave anthropological regression.”

Thanks for clarifying that, Time Magazine.

I mean, the article is full of errors, but it makes its main point: the Catholic Church teaches that homosexual sex is an "intrinsic moral evil," and is opposed to it, under any conditions, for anybody.

Now and forever, Amen.

Gay marriage has been primarily about forcing people to APPROVE of homosexual acts, and secondarily about healthcare benefits.

There's a bit of a biological, social and spiritual difference between, "I love you, let's do something ordered towards making a baby" and "I love you, let's do something ordered toward [. . .]"

RE: : “Loving the Sinner” Is Still Intolerance

Well, at least TIME is open about their agenda -— JUST ACCEPT THE SIN and CELEBRATE IT.

But then, if you accept the sin, what the heck is there to tolerate?

You only tolerate something you disagree with...

Which in essence means the word “tolerate” has lost its meaning.

I happen to think that homosexuality is 80% physiological, but so what? Just because a tendency may originate in biology doesn't mean it is moral to act out that tendency. I think orthodox Christians may have differing opinions about why people are homosexual; what said Christians should agree on is that sex is for marriage and that marriage means a man and a woman.

P.S. Not disagreeing with you — just neutralizing the Time writer's argument.

Suck a joke of an article from a naive closet homo.

“given our awareness today that homosexuality is as biological as heterosexuality, and that homosexual relationships have proven as valid and socially enriching as straight ones”

As biological, even though it has been proven to not be genetic, and is a biological dead end?

As valid, even though it serves zero purpose?

As socially enriching, even though it has correlation with several mental disorders, ends one’s genetic line, increases the chances of contracting potentially lethal diseases, and is pretty much rejected by over 85% of the world as disgusting?

Yeah, great article, doofus.

Oh yeah? Well, that's just because of "homophobia".

Oddly enough, miscegenation, which was in some ways more harshly looked down upon in some quarters, never caused any of those problems, regardless of social antipathy against it.

It’s pretty biblically clear that homosexuality is hugely offensive to God,

and that’s why the left picks this issue to promote in our society.

Loving the sinner is tolerance, what it isn’t is acceptance.

Loving the sinner, really isn't even tolerance. It is calling to repentance. Loving the sinner is actually INtolerance of the sin.

This sodomite Padgett does not understand love. We love those involved in homosexuality (in the same way that God so loved the whole world) ... therefore we point out to them that homosexual conduct is depraved, and evil, and sinful ... and we call them to repentance and conversion to Christ.

Catholic doctrine has always been that being homosexual is not a sin.

The sin comes when you indulge your homosexual proclivities.

homosexuality is as biological as heterosexuality

That is true in the same sense that cancer is as biological as other cells. It doesn't mean what Tim was trying to twist the words to mean. Biological is not the same as positive. I don't encourage my friend with stage three cancer to celebrate the growth of that part of his biology, any more than I would encourage men who are attracted to men to turn an exit into an entrance.

homosexual relationships have proven as valid and socially enriching as straight ones

I missed that proof. What I have seen is relationships among friends and co-workers that have never in my experience included fidelity and that have never in my experience lasted more than a few years. The best homosexual relationships I have seen have lacked the stability and commitment of the worst heterosexual relationships I have seen.

can we take any religious leader seriously when he claims to love gay people but at the same time demonizes the consummation of their love for each other? How, for example, can the Catholic church declare homosexuals “disordered” and their lifestyle an “intrinsic moral evil,” yet expect us to applaud its “love” for gays somewhere beneath all that homophobic bigotry?

I missed the alleged demonization. Those who commit adultery (another group whose sex lives violate scripture) are not demonized; it's just that their actions violate God's Word. The same is true of homosexuals. This moron does not understand either "demonizing" or love. Which is hateful and which is loving: (a) telling people to do whatever makes them happy sexually (b) advising people to act prudently and in a manner that will allow them to avoid a fatal disease such as AIDS? I don't see a phobia in either approach, but one has an outcome that is hard to describe as anything short of hateful.

Even if homosexual behavior is biological (by which the advocates mean "zoological") that doesn't make it morally right for human beings.

If animal behavior is normative for humans, we should be living naked in the trees, pooping on the ground, establishing social hierarchies by brawling, flirting by displaying our swollen rumps, eating placentas, and --- if our offspring seem subpar --- eating the babies, too.

Every disease, disability, disorder, abnormality, malformation and malfunction known to man or beast, is biological. Duh: What else would it be? CGI?

That doesn't mean we have to define ourselves by our disorders.

Even nature doesn't favor behaviors that lead to the specimen's genetic extinction.

“You Can’t Handle The Truth”

**********WARNING GRAPHIC DESCRIPTIONS*************

“If you really love people you tell them the truth.

Seventy-eight percent of male homosexuals have or had a sexually transmitted disease. Two thirds of all the AIDS in the US are a direct result from homosexual behavior. Fifty percent of all homosexuals have gonorrhea. Homosexual young
people are twenty-three times more likely to get a sexually transmitted disease.

In San Francisco, the sexually transmitted disease rate is twenty-two times higher than the national average. Lesbians are fourteen times more likely to contract syphilis, four times more likely to have scabies, and three times more
likely to get breast cancer.

Only three percent of homosexuals are fifty-five years and older. And only one percent die of natural causes, a la, old age. The life expectancy of a male homosexual in America is forty-two years old.

How do I say to someone I really care about, and the premise is you really care, that, “Oh, whatever you want to do is okay.” You only live half as long. And like a domino, what happens to you, you will infect other people. By the gay’s report, forty percent of homosexual men have between one hundred to five hundred partners.

Important because, again, it’s, we have these ethereal pictures and we’re not honest and clear about how homosexual practice works.

The high rate of disease among homosexual males is due to unhealthy sexual practice. Ninety-eight percent of homosexuals engage in oral sex, ninety percent
practice sex with their partner in anal sex. This is biological suicide since the rectum was not designed to accommodate a thrusting penis or sex toys. During such activities the anal wall is torn and bruised, giving sperm and germs direct access to the blood stream. Since the anal wall is only one cell thick, sperm quickly penetrates the wall, causing massive immunological damage to the body’s T and B cell defense mechanisms. This doesn’t happen during vaginal sex because of the multi-layered construction of the vagina.”

Don’t know who Tim Padgett is.

But anyone who characterizes himself as “gay” is either political about it, or justifies his own participation in homosexual behavior. Not everyone with same-sex attraction, or even who indulges in homosexual behavior, is “gay.”

And anyone who uses this terminology to reference all homosexuals is buying into this mindset.

Let me know if you need elaboration on my statements.
