Deep Misunderstanding about the Bible by Fr. Robert Barron

In this talk at a Protestant College, hear Father Robert Barron explain some of the causes for many misunderstandings and misinterpretations of the Holy Scriptures, and suggest a very helpful and valuable tool that we all could use when we read and study the Bible.

Note: The above youtube link is for an extracted segment from a longer talk (a very interesting talk), which can also be viewed in its entirety here:

Thanks! Another thing to watch on this Youtube feed we can watch on our tv because of the Roku beeber. Earlier today we were watching science videos from the “Smarter Every Day” presenter.

Barron is great as usual. Interrogate a text. Ask not just "WHAT does this mean?" but as a serious initial investigation, "HOW does his mean?"

Is this a rant? A diplomatic communique? A booklong parable? A head-spinning vision? "Last night I had the strangest dream?" A court history? A political satire? A love poem? A prison letter? A would-be suicide note? Song lyrics? And what kind of song: a marching song for the foot soldiers? A suitor's plea? Written to chastise your slutty daughters? To taunt your thuggish king? To to shame your faithless countrymen?

You can't know 'what' it means until you know 'how' it means.

I know. It’s been a half-hour already and the valkyries haven’t descended.

Don't worry - they'll come in low out of the rising sun, and about a mile out they'll put on the music.

Yes, I have seen it and watch it whenever it comes on EWTN.

Fr. Barron with the help of the Holy Spirit has put forth a beautiful and uplifting message proclaiming the richness, history, fruitfulness and doctrinal truth of our faith.

The way he does it through video reminds me of the reason churches have such beautiful stained glass.

It has made me so grateful to be Catholic.

What I like about Father Barron is that despite his erudition and the fine education that underlies his arguments, he presents his knowledge in a clear, unaffected style and unadorned Illinois accent that make his conclusions simple to grasp. As you listen, you don’t notice him sneaking up on you.

You ought to give these kinds of talks!

You say it even better than Fr. Barron does!   :-)

I agree with him that we waste our time and breath trying to defend stories that non believers love to mock. Instead, we should focus on the immutable truths that are told in them.

I love that the Church leaves it to us when it comes to believe or not believe what some people call myths or legends.

I don’t know but I do believe God’s message of Himself, creation and my relationship to both that the Bible reveals.

I also look forward to finding out first hand some day:)

That's a great way of putting it.

For some "brilliant" and "lofty" speakers, you need a translator to tell you what they are trying to say.    Not all speakers can communicate as clearly as Father Barron.

Thanks for providing this link.

Some of today's atheists really have a goofy imagination!

(By the way, EWTN is showing part 1 of the "St. Peter" movie right now too.)
