Matthew 1

New International Version (NIV) The Genealogy of Jesus the Messiah

1 This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham:

2 Abraham was the father of Isaac,
Isaac the father of Jacob,
Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar,
Perez the father of Hezron,
Hezron the father of Ram,
4 Ram the father of Amminadab,
Amminadab the father of Nahshon,
Nahshon the father of Salmon,
5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab,
Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth,
Obed the father of Jesse,
6 and Jesse the father of King David.
David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife,
7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam,
Rehoboam the father of Abijah,
Abijah the father of Asa,
8 Asa the father of Jehoshaphat,
Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram,
Jehoram the father of Uzziah,
9 Uzziah the father of Jotham,
Jotham the father of Ahaz,
Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,
10 Hezekiah the father of Manasseh,
Manasseh the father of Amon,
Amon the father of Josiah,
11 and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.

12 After the exile to Babylon:
Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel,
Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,
13 Zerubbabel the father of Abihud,
Abihud the father of Eliakim,
Eliakim the father of Azor,
14 Azor the father of Zadok,
Zadok the father of Akim,
Akim the father of Elihud,
15 Elihud the father of Eleazar,
Eleazar the father of Matthan,
Matthan the father of Jacob,
16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.

17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.

Oh LORD, Our God,
How Wonderful,
How Majestic,
How Excellent is Your Most Holy Name!
Our Hearts overflow with praise and Wonder at Your Glory!
You Alone Are Worthy of Our Love and Adoration,
You Alone Are Worthy Of Worship,
For You Alone Are The Omnipotent,
Eternal and Omniscient,
Everlasting and Almighty God!

Abba, Father,
You have given us such wonderful Words
To guide and nurture our lives.
When opening the first page of Christian Scriptures,
We are confronted with a long list of strange names.
Five of these names are of Women,
And they are women with Questions about their past.
Tamar tricked her Father-In-Law into Fathering her Twins.
Rahab was a Harlot, but helped the Israelites in Jericho.
Ruth was a Foreigner and Widow of a "Mixed Marriage".
"Uriah's Wife" was Bathsheba, who was a participant in adultery.
And, of course, Mary was suspected of a premarital affair until her betrothed was informed otherwise.
In the Ancient World, ALL of these women would have been marginalized or even executed.
And, in the present Day, in the Middle East, they still are.
Yet, You Chose to elevate these five women
And honor them in this Genealogy of Jesus of Nazareth!
How Totally Revolutionary and Uncharacteristic of the Culture of the Times!
How Awesome You Are, to defy History and Custom,
And Place these Women in the first Chapter of the First Gospel.
Thank You, Father, For Loving half of your creation as much as the other,
And bursting the chains of prejudice asunder!
Thank You for defying the bigots and those who would claim that Your Word is "Patriarchal" or "Misogynistic".
Thank You For the Judeo-Christian Ethic, which honors Mothers as well as Fathers.

We pray for the Repentance, Restoration, and Renewal of Our Beloved Nation.
We Pray For Families,
that They will prosper and Grow in You
We Pray For Children,
That They will Be Raised to Love You

We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

As We Continue Our Study of Children and Family Life in the Bible, We are confronted with a list of strange and foreign-sounding names. This is the opening Chapter of the First Book in the Christian Scripture (Known as the New Testament), and at first glance seems like a poor way to start a book! However, if we slow down and look deeper, we see a very strange thing about this Genealogy. In the Ancient World, Women were not considered important. In tribal situations with multiple wives and general brutality against women, it was Revolutionary when Moses said "Honor thy MOTHER and Thy Father". This established the nuclear family into an environment that was hostile to that very idea. To this day, both the Jewish and Christian Faiths maintain this model of the family.
The Five Women mentioned in the genealogy are all remarkable for their questionable "reputation". Some, through no fault of their own, found themselves in dire circumstances which caused them to act in a way that left them vulnerable to criticism or even death.

While this may seem to be an odd way to begin the Gospel, it shows some deeper truths of the immeasurable and awesome GRACE of Almighty God.
