"Salvatore R. Matano named bishop of Diocese of Rochester" - Rochester D&C
I note that the first comment to the D&C's story isn't very promising ...

I just read the info on Rocco’s blog, and he looks like just the guy. Brilliant, no nonsense, and with experience in clean-up and restructuring. Congratulations!

Going from over 400 diocesan priests to under 200 (and most of them are probably long in the tooth) is no mean achievement—as well as having the Catholic population shrink while the overall population grew. However, in fairness, as I understand it there were already some severe problems in place and he started off better than he finished. (I hear that his very first act after ordination was visiting the seminary, and the very first thing he did there was have them put the veil back over the tabernacle.)

I'm not clear--- you mean in Burlington?

I don't know, rumor is that he sacved the place from total collapse. Like Mt Rushmore had been undermined, acid-drinched and partly dynamited already, but he managed to save 2 of the 4 presidents.

No—the stats are what Clark has done in Rochester from 1980 through 2011. If he is good with dealing with disasters, he is going to the right place.

Time to offer up prayers for him and the diocese. There are many fine people there in need of good leadership.
