The angel brought me
back to the entrance of the temple,
and I saw water flowing out
from beneath the threshold of the temple toward the east,
for the façade of the temple was toward the east;

An Excerpt: “It was to Pope Melchiade (311-314) that Constantine gave the palace on Monte Celio, formerly property of the patrician Laterani family (hence the basilica’s appellation “Lateran”), which his second wife Fausta (Maxentius’ sister) had brought to the marriage. Soon after, the Emperor razed the adjoining imperial horse-guards barracks (allegedly the equites singulares had supported Maxentius against Constantine) and commissioned the construction of the world’s first Christian basilica on that site.
Henceforth, the Lateran palace, known as the Patriarchate, was the Pope’s official residence until the fifteenth century. The basilica, consecrated in 324 by Melchiade’s successor, Pope Sylvester I (314-335), was dedicated, by will of the Emperor, to Christ the Savior. In the tenth century, Pope Sergio III (904-911) added St. John the Baptist, and in the twelfth century, Pope Lucius (1144- 1145), St. John the Evangelist, to the basilica’s dedication.”
Another excerpt: “When the Popes returned from their sojourn in Avignon, France (1304-1377), they found their basilica and palace in such disrepair, that they decided to transfer to the Vatican, near St. Peter’s. (That basilica, also built by Constantine, had until then served primarily as a pilgrimage church.)
Pope Sixtus V (1585-1590), in one of his frenzied urban renewal projects, tore down St. John Lateran’s original buildings, replacing them with late-Renaissance structures by his favorite architect Domenico Fontana. Later, Pope Innocent X (1644-1655) engaged one of the Baroque’s most brilliant architects, Francesco Borromini, to transform St. John Lateran’s interior in time for the Jubilee of 1650. Finally, Pope Clement XII (17301740) launched a competition for the design of a new facade, which was completed by Alessandro Galilei in 1735.
Of the original Lateran basilica and palace, only the Popes’ private chapel, the Sancta Sanctorum (See Inside the Vatican, August-September 1995) remains. Sixtus V removed this magnificently-frescoed shrine to what has become a grimy traffic island. As an approach to the chapel, Sixtus moved from the Lateran Palace the Scala Santa, the stair
case which Jesus is believed to have ascended to Pontius Pilate’s palace in Jerusalem, and according to tradition, was brought to Rome by St. Helena herself.”

The Basilica of Saint John Lateran is the cathedral of Rome. It was built during Constantine's reign and was consecrated by Pope Saint Sylvester I in 324. This feast was later made a universal celebration in honor of the basilica called "the mother and mistress of all churches of Rome and the world" (omnium urbis et orbis ecclesiarum mater et caput) as a sign of love for and union with the See of Saint Peter.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
The liturgy today has us celebrate the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, called the "mother and head of all the Churches of the Urbe and Orbe". Actually, this Basilica was the first to be built after the Edict of the Emperor Constantine who, in 313, conceded to Christians the freedom to practice their religion. The same Emperor gave Pope Miltiades the ancient estate of the Laterani family and had the Basilica, the Baptistery and the Patriarchate built for him, the latter being the Bishop of Rome's residence, where Popes resided until the Avignon era. The dedication of the Basilica was celebrated by Pope Silvester in about 324 and the temple was dedicated to the Most Holy Saviour; only after the 6th century were the names of Sts John the Baptist and John the Evangelist added, from which came its common name. This occasion initially only involved the city of Rome; then, from 1565 onwards, it extended to the entire Church of the Roman rite. Hence, honouring the holy building is meant as an expression of love and veneration for the Roman Church "which", as St Ignatius of Antioch affirms, "presides in charity" over the entire Catholic communion (cf. Epistula ad Romanos, 1, 1).
The Word of God during this Solemnity recalls an essential truth: the stone temple is the symbol of the living Church, the Christian community, that the Apostles Peter and Paul had, in their Letters, already understood as a "spiritual building", constructed by God with the "living stones" that are the Christians, upon the one foundation that is Jesus Christ, who is in turn compared to the "cornerstone" cf. 1 Cor 3: 9-11, 16-17; 1 Pt 2: 4-8; Eph 2: 20-22). "Brethren,... you are God's building", St Paul writes, and he adds, "God's temple is holy, and you are that temple" (1 Cor 3: 9c, 17). The beauty and the harmony of churches, destined to render praise to God, invites us human beings too, though limited and sinful, to convert ourselves to form a "cosmos", a well-ordered construction, in close communion with Jesus, who is the true Holy of Holies. This reaches its culmination in the Eucharistic liturgy, in which the "ecclesia" that is, the community of baptized finds itself again united to listen to the Word of God and nourish itself on the Body and Blood of Christ. Gathered around this twofold table, the Church of living stones builds herself up in truth and in love and is moulded interiorly by the Holy Spirit, transforming herself into what she receives, conforming herself ever more to her Lord Jesus Christ. She herself, if she lives in sincere and fraternal unity, thus becomes a spiritual sacrifice pleasing to God.
Dear friends, today's feast celebrates an ever current mystery: that God desires to build himself a spiritual temple in the world, a community that adores him in spirit and truth (cf. Jn 4: 23-24). But this occasion reminds us also of the importance of the concrete buildings in which the community gathers together to celebrate God's praises. Every community therefore has the duty to carefully guard their holy structures, which constitute a precious religious and historical patrimony. For this we invoke the intercession of Mary Most Holy, so that she might help us to become, like her, a "house of God", living temple of his love.

St. Theodore was born of a noble family. He was still young when he joined the Imperial army.
Soon after he joined, the Emperor announced that all Christians must offer sacrifice to idols. Even as a new soldier in the Roman army he chose to die for the faith rather than worship idols, which he knew, was a sin.
Although he was young, he knew how to keep his soul pure. He was wise and considered the devil a real enemy. When his troop camped for the winter in the country of Pontus, all the soldiers took part in services to the pagan gods. But as a Christian, Theodore knew that these gods did not exist and refused to join them. He was arrested.
"How dare you profess a religion which the emperor punishes with death?" demanded the governor. Without hesitation, the young soldier answered, "I do not know your gods. Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, is my God. If you take my answer as an offense, cut off my tongue. Every part of my body is ready to suffer when God calls for this sacrifice."
The pagan judges let Theodore go, believing that he would change his mind if he was given time to think. Theodore immediately went to the Temple of Isis and set it on fire.
Then he was arrested and brought before the judge. The judges first tried to win him with kindness. When that treatment did not work, they tried to frighten him by describing the tortures he would go through. But Theodore boldly made the Sign of the Cross and replied, “As long as I have breath, I will confess the name of Christ.” In the end, they sent him to be tortured.
When the suffering soldier was led back into prison, some said that angels came to comfort him. After he had been questioned three times, he was finally burned to death in the year 306. A Christian who was standing nearby, saw his soul rise like a flash of light to heaven.
A beautiful church was later built to preserve his ashes and great crowds of people go there to pray to this martyr.

Today the Church celebrates the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome. The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the cathedral of Rome. This is not St. Peter's, but it is the Pope's cathedral. Also called the Church of Holy Savior or the Church of St. John Baptist, it was the baptism church of ancient Rome. It was built in the time of Constantine and was consecrated by Pope Sylvester in 324. This feast became a universal celebration in honor of the basilica called "the mother and mistress of all churches of Rome and the world" (omnium urbis et orbis ecclesiarum mater et caput) as a sign of love for and union with the See of Peter.
According to the 1962 Missal of Bl. John XXIII the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, today is the commemoration of St. Theodore, a Christian soldier and martyr of Asia Minor.
The Temple of Stones is a Symbol of the Living Church
Today the liturgy celebrates the dedication of the Lateran Basilica, called “mother and head of all the churches of the city and the world.” In fact, this basilica was the first to be built after Emperor Constantine’s edict, in 313, granted Christians freedom to practice their religion.
The emperor himself gave Pope Miltiades the ancient palace of the Laterani family, and the basilica, the baptistery, and the patriarchate, that is, the Bishop of Rome’s residence — where the Popes lived until the Avignon period — were all built there. The basilica’s dedication was celebrated by Pope Sylvester around 324 and was named Most Holy Savior; only after the 6th century were the names of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist added, and now is typically denominated by these latter.
Initially the observance of this feast was confined to the city of Rome; then, beginning in 1565, it was extended to all the Churches of the Roman rite. The honoring of this sacred edifice was a way of expressing love and veneration for the Roman Church, which, as St. Ignatius of Antioch says, “presides in charity” over the whole Catholic communion (Letter to the Romans, 1:1).

St. Theodore
St. Theodore was a Christian soldier who set on fire the temple of the mother-goddess Cybele at Amasea (303 A.D.). The prefect of the legion promised mercy if he repented his act and renounced the Christian faith. Theodore persevered bravely; accordingly he was cast into prison and his flesh ripped by iron hooks so that his ribs were exposed. In the midst of indescribable torture he sang joyfully, "I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise will ever be in my mouth" (Ps. 33).
Praying and singing the glories of Christ, he was burned alive on November 9. A panegyric by St. Gregory of Nyssa on his virtues is extant. Theodore's head has been venerated at Cajeta since the Middle Ages. In ancient times, particularly among the Greeks, this soldier-martyr was honored as patron of armies. During the seventh century a church was dedicated to him in Rome, and his picture appears upon the apse mosaic in the church of Sts. Cosmas and Damian.

Every church building is a symbol, a message in stone and wood and brick that points toward spiritual realities. Some churches reflect the strength and majesty of the Lord, while others reflect his humility and gentleness. Today, we celebrate the dedication of a special church, the Lateran Basilica, the cathedral church of the Diocese of Rome.
The Basilica of St. John Lateran was built in Rome on property previously owned by the Lateran family—property that fell into the hands of the emperor Constantine in the early fourth century a.d. When Constantine converted to Christianity, he donated the Lateran Palace to the bishop of Rome, and it was dedicated as the pope’s cathedral on November 9, 324. From that point on, it has been considered the mother church of all Catholicism.
Through its architecture, statuary, and art, the Lateran Basilica symbolizes the pope’s unity, both with his immediate flock in Rome and with all Christians who are in communion with him throughout the world. So we celebrate this feast not as outside observers but as members of one body, as brothers and sisters united by the Spirit and called to holiness.
This point is made clear by the inscription carved over the baptistery connected to this magnificent church: “There is no barrier between those who are reborn and made one by this one font, the one Spirit and the one faith.” Everyone is accepted! Everyone belongs! Everyone is equal—the pope and the pauper, those with difficult pasts and those with pain-free lives. We are all one family gathered together by our one heavenly Father!
Today, ask the Holy Spirit to give you a deeper understanding of your place in the body of Christ. Ask him to help you see yourself not just as an individual striving for eternal life but as part of a vast family. You are not alone on your journey! You are surrounded by brothers and sisters who can help you—and whom you can help—as you make your way to your Father’s house.

DEDICATION OF ST. JOHN LATERAN BASILICA [EZEKIEL 47:1-2,8-9,12]
The date is 573 B.C. The Israelites are living in exile. Their nation has been trampled, their holy city defiled, and their people deported into slavery in Babylon. It has been fourteen sorrowful years since King Solomons temple in Jerusalem was completely destroyed. You can just imagine the exiles distress.
But now imagine their reaction as God sends the prophet Ezekiel with a message of hope. A new temple will emerge, better than the old. From this temple will flow water that brings life and healing. God tells His disheartened people not to dwell on their present circumstances but to look to Him and trust in His promises.
We know that Gods vision for His temple was ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Jesus own body was the temple that was destroyed but raised up again by the power of God (John 2:19). Now, as members of Christs body, the Church, we are part of this holy temple. Jesus is the source of the river from which we receive life, power, and grace. Baptized into Christs death, we are immersed in Gods river of life. We ourselves are meant to become channels of grace. Baptized into Christs death, we are immersed in Gods river of life. This is what we celebrate today by turning our attention to the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome. Described as the mother and head of all the churches, this papal cathedral was built soon after 313, the year in which the Roman emperor Constantine gave all his Christian subjects the freedom to pursue their faith without persecution. The basilica takes its name from John the Baptist and John the Apostle, and also from the Laterani, the family of Constantines wife, who donated the land on which the church stands.
St. John Lateran is not just an ancient historical site. It is a symbol of the living Church dynamic, vibrant, gushing with the living water of divine life and love. Take a drink! Plunge in! Swim out into the deep, transforming waters of Gods love and grace, and you will see the Church and the world renewed.
Let us tell the Lord that we are plunging into His river of life, right into the deep end. We ask Him to let us receive all that He has for us so that we can be a channel of His life and mercy to the world.

The Catholic Church has been around for a long time, and it will be around for a lot longer — until judgment day, to be exact. No matter how hard the world has tried, it hasn’t been able to destroy the temple of the Church. This should give us a deep confidence that the Lord is with us as we journey through history. 2. Purification: Being indestructible doesn’t mean, however, that the Catholic Church does not need constant purification. When our Lord arrived to the temple in Jerusalem, he found many things that marred the spirit of prayer and devotion that was to characterize that sacred building. His vigorous reaction serves to underline the high vocation of holiness that God had given to the Chosen People. We Catholics have inherited that call; yet all too often, the ways of the world creep into our souls. Each one of us needs to submit to the Lord’s purification. He will challenge us in our conscience, and sometimes that will sting like the whip of cords. But if we are sincere in our desires, we accept this with humility, aware that our souls must be living temples of God’s presence. 3. Consuming Zeal: When the apostles contemplated our Lord’s action in the temple, “zeal” was the word that summed it all up. Jesus is zealous because he doesn’t accept the status quo of entrenched mediocrity. The day he arrives it is no longer business as usual: His Father’s house WILL be respected. Too often we let the barnacles of laziness and the accretions of apathy weigh down and extinguish our zeal. Every day we must pray that the Lord will once again “enkindle in our hearts the fire of his love.” Our zeal in living the faith is part of the way God works to make this temple of his Church indestructible. Don’t we want to cooperate with his love, so that the “gates of hell will not prevail?” Conversation with Christ: Lord, I love your Church. I thank you for the priceless gift of my Catholic faith. Protect the Church from all her enemies and help me to be an effective apostle filled with authentic zeal. Resolution: I will offer myself to collaborate in a parish ministry or other Catholic apostolate out of love for the Church. |
