Paul was a far better theologian, too. Peter, an impulsive guy, sometimes a waffler, full of enthusiasm yet sometimes something of an oaf, was just pope.

You do wonder at Jesus' judgment, making him chief shepherd after the Resurrection. Hardly the most suitable candidate, you can't help thinking.

If Peter was the first Pope, who was the second?

I think it was Peter, Paul, and Mary.

Where do you get "Simon Peter Magus"? This wayward man was, according to Acts 8:9, "Simon Magus" ("Simon the Magician.") His name was not Peter; Peter is not the given name of anybody in the NT except Simon Bar-Jonah.

Here is the transition of Simon Magus being considered God and the first pope and the big mistake that many confuse Simon Peter with Simon Magus. The next step to change Simon Magus to Simon Peter was with the title of a God by some of his followers. What is another name or title is there for a pagan god? Surprising as it may sound, it is a well-known fact among students of ancient religion, that the chief pagan gods worshipped in the early civilizations were generally known by the name or title PETER. That would make Simon Magus also be formally known as Simon Peter.

The pagan priests of the mystery religions were called PATORS or PETERS. They had the power to interpret the heathen mysteries. This is further brought out by Bunson in his Hieroglyph, page 545, where he shows that the Egyptians -- as The Bible also indicates -- called their "interpreters" or priests: PETR, that is, PETER.

It is my understanding Paul looked to the church in Jerusalem as the leader. That’s why they had themeeting about what to do with Gentiles. Then the leadership wad centered in Rome.

While Paul was a leader, I don’t see an indication he wad THE leader.

I think Peter was brilliant. He was so brilliant in fact, that he and the 11 stayed at Jerusalem, and gave to Paul the right hands of fellowship, once they perceived the grace that was given to Paul. Peter loosed himself and the 11 from the "great commission" to preach the gospel of the kingdom to all nations, and agreed to go to the circumcision while Paul went to the uncircumcision with the gospel of the grace of God. Peter was also brilliant because he knew that the kingdom was being offered to Israel on the day of Pentecost, that's what his entire sermon is about, and if they had, as a nation, accepted Christ as Messiah, he and the 11 would be sitting on 12 thrones judging the 12 tribes of Israel. Just as Christ had promised them. Peter knew that Israel was not accepting Christ and that a change was taking place. First at Pentecost, then with the stoning of Stephen, then the vision to go to Cornelius. Of course Paul had been saved by then, so Peter understood when Paul came to him with that gospel he preached among the gentiles. Israel was NOT going to be a blessing to all nations. Not yet. A change was coming. And he realized it had to do with Paul, the gentiles, and things that Paul wrote about that were "hard to be understood". Peter was so brilliant that he knew Israel's time had come. And gone. But would return again, one day. But God was doing something else by the end of Acts. It was called the dispensation of the grace of God. Peter understood it. Paul demonstrated it. And the body of Christ proves it.

This is how smart Peter was. It's just a shame that so many who claim him do not get him. He wasn't an oaf. He was an Apostle to the Jews. Who will sit on a throne with Christ and the 11 one day, judging the 12 tribes of Israel.

Please go back to Acts and read who spoke at the First Council of Jerusalem. It was Peter. James just carried out his orders in Jerusalem by giving out dietary instructions.

Think about all the places Paul had travel in Asia Minor. The Catholic Church was bigger than just Jerusalem.

Council of Jerusalem. 1^* Some who had come down from Judea were instructing the brothers,^a “Unless you are circumcised according to the Mosaic practice,^b you cannot be saved.”^* 2Because there arose no little dissension and debate by Paul and Barnabas with them, it was decided that Paul, Barnabas, and some of the others should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and presbyters about this question. 3They were sent on their journey by the church, and passed through Phoenicia and Samaria telling of the conversion of the Gentiles, and brought great joy to all the brothers. 4When they arrived in Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church, as well as by the apostles and the presbyters, and they reported what God had done with them. 5But some from the party of the Pharisees who had become believers stood up and said, “It is necessary to circumcise them and direct them to observe the Mosaic law.”

6^* The apostles and the presbyters met together to see about this matter. 7^* After much debate had taken place, Peter got up and said to them, “My brothers, you are well aware that from early days God made his choice among you that through my mouth the Gentiles would hear the word of the gospel and believe.^c 8And God, who knows the heart, bore witness by granting them the holy Spirit just as he did us.^d 9He made no distinction between us and them, for by faith he purified their hearts.^e 10Why, then, are you now putting God to the test by placing on the shoulders of the disciples a yoke that neither our ancestors nor we have been able to bear?^f 11On the contrary, we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus,^g in the same way as they.”^* 12The whole assembly fell silent
