72 Hours to Chaos
Good News Magazine ^ | 2012 | Gary Petty

What do times of disaster teach us about ourselves and society? Is our moral center what it ought to be?

In 2005 I worked as a volunteer at a shelter for people displaced by Hurricane Katrina. We tried to console confused, hungry, frightened people who had been picked off the roofs of their houses in New Orleans and transported to San Antonio, Texas.

One young woman sat on a cot staring aimlessly. In obvious shock, she ignored the activity swirling around her. I stopped, leaned down and asked her if I could help. She looked up with eyes filled with despair and asked, "What happened to my baby?"

I never knew what happened to that woman or if they ever found her baby. Since that time I have often thought about how human life can be degraded by the destructive force of natural disasters. Even more disturbing is the reality of how easy it is for human beings to devalue each other.

It's vital that we maintain the right perspective.

Civilization's thin veneer revealed in disasters

Working in a shelter for victims of Hurricane Katrina was a study in how the veneer of civilization hides the possibility of chaos. There were many encouraging examples by scores of volunteers who simply showed up and worked, at times without supervision, to unload trucks of food and water, set up cots and assist the tired and hungry refugees.

“This article was an interesting comment on the difference between the pink tribe and grey tribe. R rated language, but a good read.

http://www.ejectejecteject.com/archives/000129.html";

Thank you for posting this link and bringing it to my attention. The writer is of my own mind.

My favorite and perhaps most timely excerpt.....

“There is no corner on virtue, and no outpost of depravity. Human hearts are indistinguishable and interchangeable. Anyone who claims otherwise is, without further argument or statements necessary, a complete G^^-d::ned idiot.”

Perhaps self righteous is a more appropriate and God approved modifier, though.

Again. Thank you.

In that time I've learned that the only thing types like GPH are "exposing" is that they have nothing positive to offer in way of the gospel message or what Jesus Christ can do to change our lives and our hearts. Instead they offer destruction, hostility and acrimony.

I do not agree with the tenets of DKC's faith, but I don't see him intentionally speeding lies about the Catholic Church, or relentlessly abusing other Christians in such a way that makes me wonder if he is Christian.

There are more than a few people that call themselves Christian on these forums that really need top sit down and ask themselves what are they really trying to accomplish. Are they building up the body of Christ, or merely saying "Thank God I am not...."

"The chaos is here. The wildings, the knockout games, the violence at K-Mart sales ... the chaos is here and it’s just a matter of time before the Levee breaks."

Ditto

A Christian is not defined by how nice they are about heresy, otherwise Paul would have been run out for not “building up the body of Christ” in his battle with the false apostles/teachers:

2Co 11:10 As the truth of Christ is in me, no man shall stop me of this boasting in the regions of Achaia.
2Co 11:11 Wherefore? because I love you not? God knoweth.
2Co 11:12 But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them which desire occasion; that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we.
2Co 11:13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.

The UCG, along with other cults, not only deny the essentials of Christianity, starting off with the trinity, but assert that all Christendom is in apostascy, with their church only having the Holy Spirit. Quite literally, that is the teaching of the UCG, which requires the laying on of hands by members of their church in order to receive the Spirit in the first place.

My goal was only to let Freepers know that the source of this article was a well known religious cult which teaches such things. Knowledge is power, ya know.

By the way, be very careful who you assert is a member of the body of Christ.

2Jn 1:9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
2Jn 1:10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
2Jn 1:11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

Then post a comment and a link to it. There is no need for these relentless attacks.

I did that. Though the Pro-Heresy brigade has been spamming my ping box.

“There's a thin veneer between civilization and chaos...”

Seventy-two hours is figuring the length of time for 3 days to eat 9 meals. I think chaos would start before the three days is up if there is NO food to be had. If there is none there, that fact alone would start the chaos whether or not they had food in the house. Fear would take over quickly and chaos would happen.
