Why Men Have Stopped Singing in Church
Patheos ^ | May 8, 2013 | David Murrow

It happened again yesterday. I was attending one of those hip, contemporary churches — and almost no one sang. Worshippers stood obediently as the band rocked out, the smoke machine belched and lights flashed. Lyrics were projected on the screen, but almost no one sang them. A few women were trying, but I saw only one male (other than the worship leader) making the attempt.

A lot of modernist churches are attempting to draw young people in with bands and such. I love some Christian rock and electronic bands I listen to, but I would not want them to perform in my church. Just a perspective I guess.

We hit the decks a runnin, and we turn the guns around.

Yeah, but it’s kind of sad that people don’t feel led to “worship”/sing, that’s all. I’ve noticed this myself. I think it’s the music and the band. The band’s too loud most of the time, to hear yourself think, and the music is indeed not very good either. When I first became a Christian (in the 70’s), the music was so awesome; as well, there’s nothing like joining in a large chorus of voices singing to God.

Went to Seattle this summer to see newborn grandchild. We carried the 2 week old child into church that was so loud my wife and I could not talk to each other. Thankfully Mom took the child out. This continued for 40 minutes. I still get mad when I think about it. I categorized it as an assault on the congregation. It was self serving and not God honoring.

Nailed it. Problem is that the wife and kids are fired up about this church's young adult programs, and it is where all of their friends go to church.

Please - find a new church with scripture-based songs. Worship is THE reason we Christians go to church — much has been written on proper worship over the centuries.

I could never tolerate not hearing the voices of my husband, my children, and those around me.

We attend a PCA church — can you find one nearby?

Most churches I know of have multiple services where the type of worship you prefer is offered. Just choose the one you like, problem solved.

They are also in charge of our city's children choir who have entertained internationally....I MEAN REALLY GOOD!!!

The problem with most modern Catholic liturgical music is it sounds as if it were written to appeal to 10 year old girls. And they expect grown men to sing along?

It all sounds like THIS.

That is a a problem I hear frequently, “they have a youth program with lot’s of activities including........” It’s not that hard to do, but you have to make it about God. These type churches are not about God. They are about money and they hook families into belonging by making the kids happy. I can’t tell you how to handle your situation because I don’t know the players. But would your family want to go to a strip bar that played gospel music and passed the plate for the dancers. That’s an extreme analogy and I am not trying to preach to you. You are the head of the family and you can display that without being abusive.

The music at those "contemporary" churches is largely geared for performance, not participation. And that's just talking about the style of music, not to mention the shallow theological content of the songs.

At our church we sing real hymns out of a real hymnal (Lutheran Service Book). And we use the historic liturgy of the Divine Service. Not bragging. It's just that's where we can find the best substance, paired with appropriate music, to deliver the goods.

Congratulations on kicking the butt and joining the millions who have done likewise.
I started smoking in 1948 and went through 2 packs a day for the next 50 years, trying to quit a few times. Nothing worked for me until one day I heard Rush talk about getting rid of his “nicotine stained fingers”. I used his method and quit cold turkey. What was his method? Not thinking of all the negative things connected with smoking, but focusing on all the benefits to be gained by quitting. It worked for me. I don’t insert myself to a smoker who wants to quit, but if asked I tell them my experience.

Ponder this one to her:
“If each line of a song is a step upon which the song can built, then what will the built song look like if all the same are the same?”

Poor “Jacob’s Ladder” were it to be written by a 7-11 songwriter - - - .
