The Serpent and the Staff

New International Version (NIV)

5 they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!”

6 Then the Lord sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. 7 The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.

8 The Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” 9 So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.

How Hallowed is Your Name!
You Alone Are Worthy of Praise,
For You Alone Are The One True God.
Thank You For Your Provision,
For Your Healing and Restoration
And For Being ALWAYS Faithful to Your Promises!


Forgive us, Oh Lord, for continuing to grumble against You, even when You provide for us.

We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Jesus refers to this strange Story From The Torah when predicting His Own Death.

The Serpent and the Staff are once again juxtaposed, and while it symbolized the Loss of innocence when it appeared in the Garden, in this Incident it represents Redemption and Healing.

The Caduceus, (Not to be confused with This Symbol), shows TWO Serpents and is from the polytheistic Pagan World. It symbolizes the Greek god of healing, named Aeschylus (from which we derive the word "Scalpel").

The BIBLICAL "Caduceus" has only One Serpent, and has been adopted by the Paramedical Profession and Emergency Medical Teams. The EMT Caduceus looks just like the Staff that Moses lifted up in the Desert which brought Healing to grumbling, undeserving People.

Though it may not have been intentional to use this symbol in this way, it is ironic that EMTs often go into situations where they are greeted with danger and ingratitude. I saw a news item yesterday about a man who was pulled from his car by a rescue team who were in danger from raging flood waters. Instead of thanking the Team, the "victim" is now suing them for not coming SOONER!
