St. Catherine of Siena: Even Demons Are Repulsed By Sins Against Nature

I happened across this enlightening quote by St. Catherine of Siena, a Dominican saint and mystic, from The Catholic Church and Homosexuality. I thought it would benefit you to read it. This makes perfect sense to those of us who know about natural law, but is utter foolishness to those who are perishing. I believe that as the Church understands mental disorder more, it will become more clear how weak Satan is in his attacks against the mind, whether in regard to same-sex attraction or something like Bipolar Disorder. Satan fools us into believing that we should be focused on the brain rather than on the heart, but even he is repulsed by an actual sin against nature, because his own angelic nature is, as in human nature, naturally repelled from such a thing, as Jesus explains.

St. Catherine of Siena is here relaying the words of Jesus Christ to all of us, and she was particularly addressing those clergymen of her time who were engaging in sins against nature. As you can see, it is natural for us to be nauseated. It is also because of the sort of sin this is that often the “light of understanding” has gone out of those who commit this sin, particularly if they sin repeatedly. St Paul speaks of God eventually turning them over to sin in the Letter to the Romans.

I’ll take a stab at it. The fallen angels (demons) hate humanity and its material nature. Because we rise and are united with God in His nature and are above them. However, because they have perfect knowledge they understand on an intellectual level the necessity for a material human nature. Homosexual sodomy is such a pervesion of that material human nature that even to them it is anathema.

That’s my understanding.

Not sure I agree with the huge leap and inference to “Bipolar Disorder”. Many mental illnesses have clear underlying physical abnormalities. “Bisexual Disorder” would have made more sense lol. Have to be real careful with any individual’s interpretations of Scripture OR Saints.

What I take from it is homosexuality is a mental disorder like we have other mental disorders. God can take away any mental disorder. To act on the mental disorder of homosexuality is a sin. Rational, sane thinking humans do not engage in sex acts with someone of the same sex. It’s not the way nature (God) wired us.

It is disordered behavior, against the natural order. One might or might not define that as "mental illness". Normally mental illness is not defined strictly in behavioral terms. Homosexuality includes a strong voluntary component, essentially 100%, very much unlike conventional mental illness. I personally believe homosexuality as as much or more "societal illness" as "mental illness", but with grave personal consequences both in the temporal life and beyond.

Individuals in a state of mortal sin (including sodomy) who fail to repent go to hell. Not to be crude but I would liken it to Satan and his minions saying, “this one is going against his own very nature. Easy pickings. Low-hanging fruit. Let’s move on to something more challenging.” That’s the best I got.

Agree 100%.

Thanks. I didn’t get the inclusion of mental disorders, such as bipolar, as being perverse even to demons. I don’t understand what the author is trying to infer.
