So, Hussein had his visit with the Holy Father and, as we all knew in advance, his press corpse (yes, I spelled it that way) reacted in the very predictable way that we would all expect.
I'm sure each of us would have loved to be a fly on the wall for the private audience part of that meeting. Of course, we weren't. We also all can pretty well identify when Obama is lying about something...we can tell because his lips are moving.
Also, we should know that we won't hear what actually went on from the Holy See's point of view. A private audience is just that: private. We can, however, tell a little bit by the official communique issued by the Holy See Press Office. In doing so, we need to pay particular attention to every word.
As a sample, let us take a look at a "generic" communique. From today's visit with the President of Greece:
This morning in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, the Holy Father Francis received in audience the president of the Hellenic Republic, Karolos Papoulias, who subsequently went on to meet with Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, accompanied by Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, secretary for Relations with States.
The cordial discussions [meaning they didn't raise their voices], an expression of the existing good relations [this verbiage is important particularly if it isn't there] between the Holy See and Greece, focused on issues of common interest [being a diplomatic document, they try to find areas of accord...again, it is particularly important if it is missing], such as, in particular, the legal status of religious communities, the role of religion in society, and ecumenical collaboration.
Attention then turned to the social consequences of the worldwide economic crisis, as well as the contribution of Greece within the European Union. Finally, concern was expressed regarding the future presence of Christians in the Middle East, in relation to political instability and the situations of conflict that affect various regions of the world.
Contrast that with the communiqué from yesterday's visit with Zero:
This morning Barack H. Obama, president of the United States of America, was received in audience by Pope Francis, after which he met with Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, secretary for Relations with States.
During the cordial meeting, views were exchanged on some current international themes and hope was expressed that, in areas of conflict, there would be respect for humanitarian and international law and a negotiated solution between the parties involved.
In the context of bilateral relations and cooperation between Church and State, the Parties discussed questions of particular relevance for the Church, such as the exercise of the rights to religious freedom, life and conscientious objection, as well as the issue of immigration reform. Finally, the Parties stated their common commitment to the eradication of human trafficking throughout the world.
So what is missing from here:
First of all, we don't see any expression of "cordial relations", "good relations," "friendly relations", or anything else. That is very telling by its absence.
Secondly, we don't see any expression of "common values", we don't see any expression of "common interest" (except as an afterthought), we don't hear of any affirmation of any positive role that the Church has in the US -- which would have been something that Obama would have said during the meeting, or anything else.
Third, look at what the Holy See says was discussed:
Despite what the WaPo, CNN, or any other mainstream media source claims (fed by the Obama press machine...sorry, I repeat myself), do you see the "plight of the poor" mentioned in the agenda discussed above? Do you see "income inequality" mentioned in the agenda above?
Neither do I.
Think about it: had it been discussed by the two, it would have been mentioned. And if the two agreed on the approach, this diplomatic document would have listed that it was an area of "common interest," "common concern," or the like. (Diplomatic communiqués always like to mention areas of agreement...)
The only area where the two agreed was on the subject of the eradication of human trafficking. (Who, other than Arab slave traders, wouldn't agree with that?)

"At the end of the meeting, and following the exchange of gifts, Benedict XVI and President Bush took a brief stroll in the Vatican Gardens to the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes where they were joined by Mrs Bush and the entourage. There, the Choir of the Sistine Chapel sang two hymns".

There were obviously two separate meetings with Hussein. It's a shame that the Vatican News Service won't distinguish what was said/not said in each meeting, rather than lump it all together.

During the meeting between the Pope and Obama, His Holiness listened patiently. So did the Pope.
That is part of the boilerplate that they use for virtually every private audience by a head of state. It's all very scripted.
