Another Papal Scolding

Another Papal Scolding

“… they make themselves up like little holy cards, looking up at heaven as they pray, making sure they are seen…"

—Pope Francis, condemning Catholics (again)

When will the Pope's relentless bashing of his own subjects cease? Apparently not as long as he has breath in him and a microphone to speak into.

On April Fool’s day we had another rambling sermon likening Catholics to Pharisees who " go to Mass every Sunday, but better not get mixed up in things – I have faith for my health, I do not feel the need to give it to another… Christians who do not leave space for the grace of God – and the Christian life, the life of these people, consists in having all the paperwork, all the certificates, in order…. Christian hypocrites, like these, only interested in their formalities. It was a Sabbath? No, you cannot do miracles on the Sabbath, the grace of God cannot work on Sabbath days. They close the door to the grace of God. We have so many in the Church, we have many!”

Just who are these caricatures the Pope has in view? In Europe hardly anyone goes to Mass at all outside of traditionalist communities. And just who are these hypocrites who make sure they are seen when they pray? Certainly not like Francis, eh?

The "who am I to judge Pope" is a veritable judgment dispenser, but all the judgments seem to be against Catholics who are at least practicing the Faith. For atheists, “gay people,” the divorced and remarried—essentially the whole sinning world—there is only talk of mercy, combined with condemnations of Catholics who follow Church teaching.

This is as mysterious as it is disturbing.

I don’t understand what you’re babbling about, nor do I care.

You know what was probably the main thing that drove me out of the church? Being scolded by the church in my thirties for believing things that the church taught me when I was growing up, while claiming that “church teaching has never changed.” The latest example - at the local church level - is the turnabout on homosexuality. I eventually said, “[Redacted] that [redacted].”

I've always wondered how the RCC could go from a church that burned people at the stake over minor doctrinal disagreements to the condition it is in today; yet Catholics will state with a straight face that the teachings have never changed.

My sentiments exactly. The Catholic Church is unrecognizable from what it was pre-VII, never mind in the Middle Ages.

"Semper idem" my foot!

“Fundamentalist!”

But all Catholics use that word as an insult.

Discuss the issues all you want, but do not make it personal.

This is intended primarily for the one primarily addressed, who made the below comment, but addressed to two others for reason I made mention of those names while touching upon comments made. Feel free to skip over or ignore this note, if you not be him;

That reply #41 addressed to you, said;

Which reply itself was to your own comment #36 addressed to ebb tide, which reads;

So we see there was a misplaced comment, do we not? That would allow one to say, as is seen in reply to a comment #36 here; "I don't understand what you are babbling..." ... in their own opinion characterizing the less-than-clear message found there as "babbling", which one can do regardless, for it comments upon a message itself (words being said) rather than more narrowly upon a person.

That said, let us take a look to see if it can be reasonably determined, just what was likely to have been intended for Herr Ebb Tide (as you addressed that person).

The time-stamp given at the your own comment at #35 is 3:05:08 PM.

Right above that, which is again your own comment, at #34 the time stamp there is 3:03:47 PM which is a time difference of 00:01:21 or possibly otherwise expressed as --- one minute, twenty-one seconds. Are you with me so far?

At that less the a minute-and-a-half previous than your own next comment, you had said to another, having addressed (or misaddressed as the case may be) that comment to Jeff Chandler, saying there;

which if is not "getting personal" I'm not sure what, but if the other comment inquired after as to if "chopped liver" if not possibly that (nothing against butchers, mind you) could leave your own, immediately above highlighted comment --- what --- mashed potatoes?

If so, little spoonfuls of those appear to my own eyes (figuratively speaking of course) to have been flung not only around the room as a child sitting in a 'high-chair' may carelessly do, but more like a better aimed flinging that a juvenile might do.

So how about you? Do you like fried liver (with grilled onions) and a side of mashed potatoes (with gravy)?

I do, but lot's of people don't like liver, chopped or no, and I'd prefer to not have it flying around the room, being wasted, unless it's like -- part of the show or something, like part of the entertainment such as at one of those Renaissance-restaurant,live-action dinner theaters, with jousting and damsels (in low-cut peasant blouses, hey!) and plenty of ale to wash it all down.

While we are here at the table talking about food (chopped liver, mashed potatoes, etc.) let us consider that it be quite a lot to ask of anyone in position of moderator of this at times quite contentious 'forum' (sub-forum of FR) absolute or God-like perfection in all which they do. In the vernacular -- "cut them some slack"?

Meaning -- if there is any mistake, let us all freely extend grace, particularly those of us who could otherwise be known as being guilty with a prior, which I'll confess does include myself --- but sitting in on this very forum for years --- I've seen a lot of "food-fights" and know well enough who has long demonstrated tendency towards flinging what.

The innocent act just doesn't fly. Not near as good as them taters' did. Ya' got away with tossing those.

leaving I don't know how many pork chops for the "Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate", that order may be [figuratively] afforded, or if in the end they'll just be told to "eat their peas", which ebb tide's inquiry as to "what much compassion has Francis shown...[them]?" started the ball rolling (if I can shift metaphor -- but if not --- just moosh the 'taters into proper shape?).

But what now appears on our plates as it were -- but indications of there being disputation and disagreement as to that moderator-of-moderators within Roman Catholicism, Francis himself, does or does not do in his [perceived by many or desired by some] own role there, as "moderator"?

Could we leave the more localized RM more out of the public criticism loops, on these pages? On another thread today -- I saw something of the same (but there ---taking it further). That sort of thing can be highly destructive to this forum. Thank you (if you have read this far).

How do you keep that beam in your eye, do you prop it on the feet you keep in your mouth?

Who are you to judge?

Never mind that, just walk the plank, matey.

Those Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate need all the biting and devouring among 'good catholics' they can get, with an occasional human sacrifice thrown in (so swim for it, after taking that short kinda' long walk) for good measure to keep the charism goin'?

All joking aside, it did look like somebody around here caught unnecessary flack over what the "pope" may have said or failed to say, done or has failed to "do".

It's like a hobby for some...

George Costanza, one of these days, is going to run clear out of popcorn. Then --- everyone will be called to account. Including George. And Francis, too.

But those who speak against either you or I (wrongly) can be forgiven for doing so, even by our own selves. And that's no joke.

Thank you for being far too polite. Because otherwise -- in pushing back at some of what I see going on, I do push the envelope, I admit.

But no matter how furiously I pedal my little car, making vroom vroom noises, that stingy JimThompson won't break down and provide me a working si-reen. dang that JimThompson. ;^')

Another Papal Scolding

“… they make themselves up like little holy cards, looking up at heaven as they pray, making sure they are seen…”

This is not a condemnation; it is an observation.

I can’t help but wonder why Catholics, or any Christians for that matter, aren’t thankful for reminders, even criticisms, that we must never pause in our efforts to improve.

If a suggestion by the Pope helps me to look at myself and see my faults better, I’m glad to have the opportunity for improvement and the reminder that I’m far from perfect.
