The Silencing of Sister Jane

Sister Jane Dominic Laurel was tossed under the bus so frequently last week that I hope she will be able to get the tread marks out of her habit. A vibrant teacher of Catholic orthodoxy on sexual morality based on Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body, she had given lectures around the country with no controversy until she gave a presentation at the hilariously misnamed Catholic High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, and some parents and their spoiled brats decided to stage a massive hissy fit.

The diocese of Charlotte wasted no time in cowardly apologizing for the presentation of Sister Jane. Go here to read all about it.

Now, her own order and Aquinas College are sending her under the bus:

From Sister Mary Sarah, O.P., President of Aquinas College:

The events around the recent talk by Sister Jane Dominic Laurel, O.P. in Charlotte, NC have produced a great deal of speculation from many sides. Among the commentators, there are few who were actually present to hear the talk, which was not recorded.

What a loss.

Sister Jane did no wrong — she only told the truth. Her source — John Paul II’s “Theology of the Body.”

Prayers for her.

Nothing new here. Prophets and those speaking the truth are usually not well received and are tormented. However a culture built on decadence will crumble. Eventually Sister Jane will be remembered and honored by the faithful remnant that will reconstruct.

What, did she say something about marriage is only between a man and a wonan and offended the homos?

You know the day is coming when we find out that a large percentage of the children adopted by the homo population have been sexually abused and they confirm that pedophelia is heavily rampant in the homosexal lifestyle.

The idea of teaching Catholic doctrine at a Catholic school is not encouraged by the diocese of Charlotte and they backed the students??

The school needed to apologize for the presentation - sexuality instruction should all be PRE-APPROVED by the parents. The sister should also have changed her presentation when/if she realized that parental consent was not granted.

I could care less if she gave teaching authentic to the Magesterium. I don’t discuss Just War theology with my 3 year old and many parents don’t want sexuality discussed without their consent. Premature sexualization is EVIL - and for some of the more conservative members of that high school this was premature.

This is insulting to the Catholic faith. Those that persecute Sister Jane are in grave error.

I watched her presentation and found her arguments sound and filled with correct Catholic doctrine.

These insipid creatures that attack her show their complete lack of understanding of church theology.

How are you?

The school needed to apologize for the presentation - sexuality instruction should all be PRE-APPROVED by the parents.

She wasn't talking about specific homosexual sexual practices, as in Massachusetts public high schools. She was addressing the evil of homosexuality itself, and its association with other social pathologies.

She was speaking to a high school audience at a Catholic school. It would be no different from speaking about the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah, or about adultery and divorce.

The parents were objecting to the criticism of homosexuality per se.

I know the grounds that those particular parents opposed the presentation. I am saying that me, as a conservative parent, would not want any discussion of homosexuality in any context in the classroom without my permission. This leads to premature sexualization of children not ready for marriage.

I am conservative and I oppose what she did. No parental pre-approval was given here. Any talk related to sexuality should have preapproval.

Dear Sister Mary Sarah, O.P., President of Aquinas College,

Perhaps you would consider allowing Sister Jane Dominic Laurel, O.P. to transfer to a CATHOLIC ORDER, since you refuse to live up to the name?!

At a Catholic high school, when a sister is explaining why it is intrinsically evil? Would you object to her explaining the reason for the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah?

This was a Catholic high school and the talk was part of a series billed as talks on JPII’s Theology of the Body, about marriage and sexuality. Everybody knew perfectly well what it was about, and in fact, one of the sections is on social attitudes and Catholic teaching, which is exactly what she was discussing.
