Justin Welby: The Anguish I Face Over Gay Marriage

Archbishop of Canterbury suggests blessing gay marriages would divide Anglican Church because some worshippers in Africa would never support homosexuality

The Archbishop of Canterbury has suggested he is powerless to provide blessings for gay marriages because to do so would split the global Anglican Church.

In an interview with The Telegraph, the Most Rev Justin Welby says that the Church had probably caused “great harm” to homosexuals in the past — but there was not always a “huge amount” that could be done now to rectify the situation.

Although indicating that he was sympathetic to calls for the Church to publicly honour gay relationships, the Archbishop says that it is “impossible” for some followers in Africa to support homosexuality. In the interview, the leader of the Anglican Church, which has 77  million followers globally, speaks movingly of the persecution faced by Christians in parts of the world. He indicates that the Church must not take a step that would cut off these groups, most of them in the third world, however much this angers parts of society in Britain.

The introduction of same-sex marriage in England and Wales last month has brought divisions within the Church of England to a new intensity.

He can’t argue against it because it’s God’s will? And he’s an archbishop?

“the Church had probably caused “great harm” to homosexuals in the past “

And how much harm would you do to homosexuals if wink at it and not call it for what it is?

It isn’t a moral decision, it is a political one?

This is obama in a Mitre...

We left the Episcopal “church” 6 years ago and never looked back. Looks like we’ll be leaving the Anglicans soon. If the Bible isn’t truth - what’s the “church” for, anyway? Stand on the truth or get out of the way.

We know what the Bible says about the lukewarm church. If it is right then not supporting it would be wrong but as it is sinful then not condemning it is wrong! Playing politics with people’s belief system is not a good thing!

You call yourself an “Archbishop, a man of God?” Have you read the Bible lately? Please allow me to remind you: Genesis 2:24: Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Rev.: 22:18-9: I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll. And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll.

We are not here to reconcile God to man, but man to God.

Does the anglican church have or has ever had any shred of principles?

Perhaps the answer to that is in its origin. A religion created for the convenience of a certain royalty. Apparently that tradition continues.

Gay “marriage” cannot exist. Marriage is the legal framework devised to represent the specific biological relationship which exists to guarantee the next generation. Thus, it cannot exist between members of the same sex.

Yes, except now, they only seem interested in queens.

Sounds like Welby is playing politics and a money grubber. “I would endorse gay marriage if I could but I dont want to lose have the take in the plates on Sunday morning.” That was a waste of time you spent in seminary.

I guess the Bible is optional now. That 'church' remains lost. Remember, the Anglican Church was founded to give a king a divorce

What Christianity and the Bible represents to the homosexual is a condemnation and rejection of a choice, a choice that flies in the face of God's natural order, indeed, in the face of God. We who call ourselves Christian have had to endure much segregation and torment from all walks of society down through the ages because of our position in Christ and henceforth our stand for God and His nature.

As such, we know our stand must be with charity toward all sinners, not like the Phelps's of the world, for we ourselves are redeemed sinners. Yet because we take that stand, we are ridiculed and tormented by the world, nevertheless our attitude should be, "though the whole world reject me, I stand with Christ and His way while I live on this earth, come what may".

Sorry, gay guy-gal, you may beat against the gates of heaven, but unless you repent and believe you will not be allowed access but instead be cast into hell, along with all other sinners, (liars, murderers, God haters, Satan worshipers, drunkards, druggies, wife beaters, adulterers, etc.,) who reject God. BUT the good news is that if you turn to God and away from your sinful nature, you will be saved... John 3:16.
