VATICAN CITY - Pope Francis on Monday declared that everyone has the right to be baptized, even aliens should they come knocking on the church's door.
Christians cannot "close the door" to all those who seek baptism even if they are "green men, with a long nose and big ears, like children draw," the pope said at his daily Mass, according to Vatican Radio.

The consent comes through the parents and godparents. God honors the family, He honors their desire that their children be saved through the gift of Faith. It is the power of God that does this, through the Sacrament of Baptism which He established, and the sacrament of Matrimony which He established.
I don't think so but he must have been Catholic...Catholics turn to him and his ilk long before they turn to God in the scriptures for truth as can be seen in this thread...
Aristotle knew more about God through the light is his reason than most souls alive today. He did not have the benefit of Divine Revelation, which we enjoy today. Depends on your definition of spirit doesn't it? And whether they have soul depends on your definition of soul.
Depending on your definitions and classifications, animals can or cannot have either.

I think they have self awareness and likes and dislikes, whereas insects act almost purely on instinct alone. Some days Stella DEMANDS her canned food and other days she ignores it and it goes to waste. Some days Beaux sleeps in the living room on his purr pad on the ottoman and once and a while he'll sleep at the foot of our bed. Some days they get along with each other and other days Stella ignores Beaux and hissed at him if he tries to play. Stella asks to be picked up and smooched but other times she will run away if I try to pick her up. Beaux will let me OR hubby pick him up any time we want. Each cat we have had the joy of sharing our lives with has been distinctly individual, with their own personalities and temperaments. But, I agree with you, I do not believe this means they have "spiritual souls".
"Some Pope" that just so happens to supposedly be the successor to St. Peter also supposedly hand picked through the leading and guiding of the Holy Spirit and mandated to be obeyed by all Catholics, you mean? Is it too much to expect that when the Pope speaks of things pertaining to the Catholic faith - no matter how offhanded - that he at least is saying something that matches what Roman Catholics are all supposed to believe? I sure am seeing a lot of "buyer's remorse" going on this past year....that's not supposed to happen, either, is it?

It would be nice if pope's were perfect human beings capable of saying and doing no wrong, but such is not the human condition. Paul rebuked Peter, after all.
The only time a pope is guaranteed to speak correctly is when speaking ex cathedra on faith and morals. There have only been a couple or so ex cathedra pronouncements in history, and JPII's one-off about dogs have souls was not one of them.
Its also a false assumption to think that the Holy Spirit will always give you what you need, rather than what you deserve (regarding a certain pope).
A quote by someone I can't recall goes roughly along the lines of "If Judas could be an Apostle of Christ, why should we be surprised that there are vile popes?"
