I would presume you have, or had, a third class FCC license. If so, then it would not then, or now, authorize you to operate an amateur radio transmitter. To do so you have to take and pass an FCC written licensing exam of which there are three; technician, general and extra classes. Technician is the entry class and each successive class permits or allows operation on a greater range of frequencies.

If you are interested in becoming a HAM (I hope you are for it is a great hobby) you might call your local emergency management official to ask if there is a local club and point of contact. If you know a local HAM, then ask them. Absent this, go to www.arrl.org and try to navigate their web page for information about local clubs. If you send me your location off list and via Freep mail, perhaps I can point you in the right direction.

HAM radio is VERY popular in Japan. I was thinking you were in the states and it would not be to difficult to find a local club, but...not so easy in Japan. Again, I would suggest contacting the American Radio Relay League at www.arrl.org.

Where in Japan are you, i.e., city?

Thank you for the info, I will check-up on it :)

I am in Chiba City (Chiba, Chiba), close to Tokyo Prefecture (Chiba Pref. is also where “Tokyo” Intl. Airport and “Tokyo” Disneyland are :p) ...

Curious if you ever knew “Cowboy Bob” from Texas (on HAM)... he was a neighbor of mine while I was growing up. Sadly, he passed away recently :(. (He was also Navy intel/encryption during WWII).

Thanks for your quick reply.

I just sent an email to a HAM in Yokohama asking for the pertinent information you need plus I’ve asked for help on a HAM chatboard here in the US. I’m sure I’ll have some answers for you soon. I asked the gentleman in Yokohama for permission to give you his personal information so will pass along as soon as I hear back from him. I do not know him but, oddly, he had requested I “friend” him on the HAM chat board. Not sure how he picked me but that is OK.

No, I did not know a “Cowboy Bob”. I hear a HAM in Dennison, Tx. most nights who probably did know him.

I actually don't think it's odd at all.. there are very few that have ever even heard of HAM anymore :p

I DO remember a friend of my father's that demonstrated using short burst binary from Texas to Australia (about the time we had 300Bd modems first come out.. He wasn't using the modem though ;^))

“Ham radio is NOT for broadcast. It is intended for 2 way communication. Broadcasting can get your license yanked.”

You are exactly right. Good that I read you post, I was going to say the same thing.

I got you beat, and I am so ignorant I couldn’t ask an intelligent question. Doesn’t help that the preacher has kept me in the dark about what he plans to do. Stop by the church tomorrow and try to catch him in the office and find out what the secret squirrel stuff is all about.
