Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem






"Baptism" is a Greek word that means simply "Immersion". It was very recognizable as a religious activity in First Century Jerusalem, as it was Commanded by The Law Of Moses to ritually cleanse all objects and people involved in the Sacrificial System. The Hebrew Word for this is ""Mikva", and many "Mikvaot" have been found in excavations surrounding the Temple Mount. John was different, as he was immersing people out in the desert, in the Jordan River, nearly 25 miles away from the Temple Precincts!
The Temple officials had to have been extremely annoyed by this, because it usurped their authority and seemed to take spiritual matters out of their hands. John was, in effect, telling the people that they could approach God "Outside of the System".

John's response to the Pharisees reminds me of the famous Ronald Reagan quote:

Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.

The Pharisees could not coast into heaven just because Abraham was their ancestor. We, as Americans, should take heed.

Just FYI, a mikvah could always be a natural body of water, then and now.

What marvelous insights, left that other site, as John was “outside the system.”

Lifting up Israel - that she may accept her Messiah - as well as our beloved America to turn back to God.
