For a priest his LIFE is service to God. For a minister, it would have to be less, even if there were more ministers. A man can't give 100% to both, can he?

That's because overseers are called to oversee the flock...And the first requirement is that the overseer have a wife and family; to show that he can run his household well before he is put in charge of overseeing the flock of God...

"No one in my church promotes queers or any one unmarried to higher positions...In fact, there are no higher positions than a pastor or elder..."

Homosexual men aside, --- that's a different topic --- you've got me puzzled here. Maybe I'm not undersanding this correctly. You require your clergy to be married? I thought marriage was supposed to be voluntary?

Does this solution involve a meat cleaver?

Well, it IS a voluntary thing. If you don't want to be celibate, you don't choose a celibate vocation.

In the bible it tells us that people have different gifts, different callings...You have any scripture that tells us only single, celibate men are called to the ministry??? So your religion can reject a person who has been called by God to the ministry??? It's not your religion that hands out the gifts...

Lol. Being a good husband and father ISN'T the same at all as being a good priest, vicar or minister. Success at one isn't a guarantee for success at the other.

A pastoral flock is NOT comprised of a wife and children. The flock is comprised of children and adults who are looking for spiritual guidance, not parenting or being a husband.

VERY different skills sets.

Let me tell you something, Iscool. As in any other profession --- I should say ALL other professions -- a person who is guilty of some vice which disqualifies him for that employment, gets the position anyhow by effectively concealing the vice.

That goes for any vice: a propensity to steal, to commit fornication, to vent out-of-control temper, to engage in fraud, to resort to lying and perjury, to exploit co-workers or subordinates, to sabotage other people's work, whatever. If you want the position anyway, you can only get it by concealing and lying about your activities.

Do you think Jerry Sandusky got that coaching job at Penn State and was allowed to mentor young athletes because he put "I like to touch boys' genitals" on his resume?

Do you suppose Bernie Madoff was chosen as an investment advisor and chairman of NASDAQ because he advertised that he was into Ponzi schemes and securities fraud?

You reckon Bradley ("Chelsey") Manning landed an assignment as an Army intelligence analyst because he told them he liked to steal classified documents?

Homosexuality and pedophilia disqualify a man to be a priest, a seminarian, or any other kind of clergy in the Catholic Church. You think they didn't master the arts of deception, learn to live a double life, and lie their way in?

Oh, please!

"Paul also tells us that all the clergy must have wives and children..."

He must mean those who aren't, as he recommended, celibate.

That's true...But failing at the first one is a fair indication that you may fail at the second one...

And practical guidance as well as spiritual...Like Paul said, if you can't rule your own house, how are you going to rule God's??? God says 'prove it, first'...

Great point! Interesting how Catholics always shift the focus just enough to attempt to divert us from what scripture says concerning a subject.

Well, I'll tell you something too...HaHa...If you're involved in illegal activity and are required to have people around you, it is plenty common to pick those who will cover for you and watch your back...

We don't know if Sandusky had help with what he was doing...We also know Bernie had accomplices under him...

Homosexuality and pedophilia disqualify a man to be a priest, a seminarian, or any other kind of clergy in the Catholic Church. You think they didn't master the arts of deception, learn to live a double life, and lie their way in?

Some did, I'm sure...And when they got there, they found they had comrades and superiors who would aid them and apparently they would aid the superiors in the cover-ups...

And there's no doubt that some boys were recruited by those in authority, reared and brought into the ministry that way...

"You have any scripture that tells us only single, celibate men are called to the ministry???"

No. Not that's not what we believe, that "only single, celibate men are called to the ministry." That is not the teaching of the Church.

Just looking at today's church bulletin from my parish. The ministries listed on the front page: two celibate priests, three married deacons, nine people on the parish staff in paid pastoral associate or ministries positions. Of those, two are single and seven are married.

It's obviously not true that there's some Catholic dogma that "only single celibate men are called to the ministry."

"So your religion can reject a person who has been called by God to the ministry??? It's not your religion that hands out the gifts.."

This is silly stuff, Iscool. Is your church obliged to hire any and every applicant for Pastor? Your church has no authority to reject somebody who wants to be Choir Director? You can't turn anybody away who feels called to be an Elder or Deacon or whatever you've got?

In our church, a vocation (from God) has to be "discerned" by the Church. It has to be that way. Otherwise, you couldn't exclude a gay guy who claims "a calling from God" for Youth Ministry ---now could you?

Of course ecclesial vocations have to be approved by the Church.

I’m guessing “solution” is code for “pastoral”.

He must mean those who aren't, as he recommended, celibate.

Your Catholic bible uses the word celibate...That's not in my bible...But thankfully celibate has more than one meaning and it's not always 'sex-free'...And since the next verses tell you they must have children, 'celibate' is not a very good choice of words when used in the way your religion claims it...It doesn't fit the context...
