Putin Building Church, Monasteries in the Kremlin

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for two monasteries and a church that were demolished during Soviet times to be rebuilt in the Kremlin, the largest overhaul of the site's architectural landscape in nearly a century.

Putin has cultivated strong ties with Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, adopting more conservative policies and prompting some critics to suggest the line separating state and church has become blurred.

At a meeting on Thursday with Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and top administrators of the Kremlin site, Putin said his plan would involve tearing down a building used for administrative purposes to restore the site's "historic appearance."

Putin gave no indication of the cost of construction. Russia's economy is teetering on the brink of recession and faces reduced access to foreign capital after the West imposed sanctions in retaliation for Moscow's policies in Ukraine.

The Kremlin, a fortified landmark sprawling across 69 acres in central Moscow and home to the president's office and his administration, has seen many attacks in its six-century history and has come to symbolize Russia's enduring power.

Putin won't allow the building of any new Mosque in Moscow though. At least he has his priorities straight.

Century-old mosque demolished in Moscow

It's Russia. Do the American thought police feel that they have sway over there, too?

You do know that the Russian Orthodox Church is a tool of the Russian Government, and has been so since the time of Stalin, right?

From a historical as well as a religious point of view, I’m all for it. Plus it will create jobs for quite a while. It will take many expert architects and restorers and artisans to pull this off. Russia has many of such skilled artisans and I’m sure they will bring in more from other countries to accomplish this just as they have done in the historical past for their palaces, museums, churches, etc.

Russians have great talent. I will love following the progress of this unique project. Vlad wants to create a legacy and a ticket to heaven. You can say all you want about it being very close to a state run Orthodox Church in Russia. Nevertheless Putin made it once again possible for the common folk and in fact all Russians to practice their original Russian orthodox religion and worship openly. He turned a very atheist oriented country back towards a religious one. Putin himself is a believer and often wears a neck cross.

I think this church building project in itself, will be one of Putin’s greatest accomplishments for his country. And being in the Kremlin, it will also become a tourist cash cow, rivalling St. Peter’s in Rome. Especially if they stick very close to recreating the original churches. I will follow this with great interest. It will be some legacy, and I am fascinated by it.

I might add that at the moment the two most popular and admired leaders in the world are Vladamir Putin and Bibi Netanyahu. Interesting.
