CNN has posted what an only be called a cheap shot at American bishops.
This is yellow journalism.
The story, HERE, is about the “lavish” residences of some bishops.
The piece starts out with an rookie … or rather unprofessional… error, that is, the suggestion that the personal residence of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, is some sort of studio apartment over the local mercado. It cost a hell of a lot of money to get the building ready for the Pope to live in, and it ain’t cheap to provide security there. But poverty can be expensive.

The idea CNN and Fishwrap are proffering is that unless His Excellency (or just plain “Bill”) lives in a box over a grate and drinks from puddles on the sidewalk, he must be some sort of heartless sybarite. The hitch is that, no matter how humbly an American bishop would choose to live, his life couldn’t possibly suck enough for liberals and dissidents. The next article would be “ARCHBISHOP HAS LAVISH DRINKING PUDDLE”. ”Why?”, they would cry “Why was this puddle not sold for three hundred denarii and given to poor undocumented children?”
Meanwhile, I await the CNN and Fishwrap article which praise His Excellency, the Extraordinary Ordinary, Robert C. Morlino, Bishop of Madison, whose residence, though still of almost rococo elegance, is in a less than opulent neighborhood.
Note the elegant (power) lines, the superb architraves which caress the windows, the balustrade and corbels of the balcony with its subtle and yet insouciant jut, the whimsy of the kitchen’s stove-hood vent:

No mention of the palatial residences of some non-denominational ministers. Ping!
The article was written by a Catholic wasn't it??? Why try to drag Protestants into your sewer???
If you guys want to house your bishops in multi-million dollar mansions, that's your business...It does sound as tho there are some Catholics who are not too excited about it...
I did read the article and was curious about something...A number of these bishops have 'priests' as their personal secretaries...A guy spends 8-12 years in school to become a secretary???Maybe I don't want to know what the job entails...
Not trying to drag anyone into anything. It was an observation ... nothing more. Let’s expand it to include any non-catholic faith.

it’s not that kind of job where you type and file and answer the phone, the diocesan office has those. The secretary of the bishop makes sure the liturgy is correct where the bishop is about to celebrate mass, meaning the sanctuary is set up properly, the altar servers knows what they are doing, the deacons and lectors and Extraordinary ministers know what they have to do, the readings are in the right spot, etc..he also concelebrates the mass..knows when to remove his mitre.... every day they are in a different church, school, hospital, monastery, function, etc. The secretary is part of the advance team. That’s what the job entails, not what you are thinking.

Why do these religious leaders need opulent houses??

Why do they accept living in opulence when the Son of Man, who they purport to serve, had no place to lay his head?
When there are unmet needs - even in their own congregations?
When the ongoing costs to heat, cool, light and maintain these properties is a continual drain on valuable resources?
Some are rich, but how many are full of offices, dining areas and meeting rooms?

Actually, the papal apartments still exist as they did, and the whole complex is still Tiara property, so to speak. Pope Francis simply chooses to live at the Casa Santa Marta instead. Which makes this whole story rather stupid from the standpoint of “Why can’t they be more like Pope Francis?” but whatever.
The residences are all very nice, to be sure. “Palatial” is stretching it, even for the larger ones. And the smaller ones...San Antonio in particular? That’s palatial? Seriously, CNN? Just stop right now.
I think - and I expect Father Z would agree - that dioceses need to consider the facilities they own, including bishops’ residences, in light of their practical utility for the current apostolic needs of the diocese.
It’s an important job to know when to remove a man’s hat, especially since the bishop is usually a man of no experience, training or education in the rubrics of the Catholic liturgy. How did the Apostles manage their mitres?
