Sister Elizabeth Johnson: ‘The Waste of Time on This Investigation is Unconscionable’

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (RNS) A nun who drew U.S. Catholic bishops’ ire with what they consider radical feminist writings fired back Friday (Aug. 15), saying their investigation of women’s orders is wasteful when financial mismanagement and sexual abuses are being covered up.

Sister Elizabeth Johnson, a theology professor at Fordham University, accepted the Leadership Conference of Women Religious’ top award and then lambasted bishops for criticism of her book “Quest for the Living God,” saying it appears they’ve never read it.

“To this day, no one, not myself or the theological community, the media or the general public knows what doctrinal issue is at stake,” she told the Nashville assembly of about about 900 sisters representing 80 percent of the nation’s nuns.

In her 20-minute acceptance speech, followed by a standing ovation, Johnson suggested the conference’s support of her work prompted the investigation by the church’s top enforcer of orthodoxy, the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith.

Johnson’s book includes chapters on black and feminist theology and interfaith engagement. She said book sales skyrocketed after the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops criticized it.

The LCWR has been undergoing a Vatican-ordered doctrinal investigation since 2009. In 2012, the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith ordered nun’s group to reform its statutes and appointed Seattle Archbishop J. Peter Sartain to oversee changes, including a rewrite of the group’s charter and approval of all speakers at future assemblies.

In April, a top Vatican official warned the LCWR that in recognizing Johnson it would provoke the Holy See.

“When the moral authority of the hierarchy is hemorrhaging due to financial scandals and many bishops who … cover up sexual abuse of children, a cover up that continues in some quarters to this day, and thousands are drifting away from the church … the.......

The LCWR knows that Card. Muller and the CDF are dangling in the wind. +Francis' and Muller are not on the same page and the LCWR knows it. +Francis is too busy knocking the bejabbers out of the FFI.

Just my humble opinion,

of an outsider looking in...

...without ILLEGAL immigration,

...the numbers for the Catholic Church in the United States

of America...

would have fallen through the floor. PERIOD

... their investigation of women’s orders is wasteful when financial mismanagement and sexual abuses are being covered up.

And next it will be wasteful when every person on earth still doesn't have his own apartment and a Cadillac. These people don't care about financial waste.

They also don't care about sexual abuse: they don't think there's anything wrong with consensual intergenerational same-sex intimacy.

Sister Elizabeth sounds like a democrat, “why are you looking at me, hey they did it first, look at them look at them”

Sister Elizabeth is a great example of the very WORST that came out of all the reforms the Church made.

I grew up with Catholic nuns and the old bats were irritating even back then. They were just too many pompous old biddies who forgot what their vows were.
I have fond memories of NONE of them--no nun-pun intended.

True story. I was a freshman at a local Catholic girls high school. I had been outside at lunch and came back from lunch with PINK cheeks. What do you expect, I was 14 years old.
Sister Annoying told me to go wash the rouge off my cheeks. Lol. I never argued with them. It was useless. SO I went into the bathroom and SCRUBBED my cheeks--VIGOROUSLY.
Yep, you guess it: I made them EVEN REDDER than they were before. When I returned to class Sister Annoying saw me and said...nothing. Lol!!!
Besides my dad was SO strict that I wasn't allowed to wear ANY make-up until I was 16 years old. If she had had any brains she would have KNOWN that my cheeks were from being outside. She didn't like me and the feeling was mutual.

It PROBABLY had to do with the little "lottery" she held in class. It was a trick to get us to do our religion homework. I won the lottery and had THREE "excuses" from homework in her religion class.
I saved them until we had a horrifically big homework assignment. I UNDOUBTEDLY pranced up to her and, with a look of SMIRK and SMUG on my face, gave her one of those excuses. Lol. Was THAT ever fun.

You KNOW that this is true because I couldn't have made up something so silly.

These Sisters are like a Fifth Column within the Church attempting to change doctrine. They must be seriously challenged.

May God bless those good nuns for dedicating their lives to teaching the Catholic faith to young children.

May God forgive those who abused them and to this day speak ill of them.

And may the Almighty forgive you for the inaccurate, cruel, useless, vain, arrogant assumptions YOU make about people you don't know.

I was taught by nuns for eight years. Some were nice, some were less nice; but they all fortified my Catholic faith.

One thing I noticed was that most of the girls who sassed the nuns ended up being bad girls; pregnant, drug addicts, etc., or bitter people, who to this day, speak ill of them and attack others who try to defend them.

Archbishop Sartain needs our prayers. He has a spine, it’s just that the sisters are not listening or obeying.

But there comes a time for action when the Sisters persist in doing so.

I thought about that as I typed my answer to you.

I’m thinking that either Archbishop Sartain or the Pope will simply dissolve some of these orders if they keep refusing to obey.

Possibility?

I do know those people. And I'm speaking to one now, who has described her distaste for the teaching nuns of the past.
