Wisconsin native Cardinal Raymond Burke calls for 'new evangelization'

Pewaukee — Catholic education, in the family and in schools, is essential to the transformation of culture and a bulwark against today's increasingly secular society, Wisconsin native Cardinal Raymond Burke told hundreds of Catholics who gathered Thursday for a fundraising dinner in Waukesha County.

And he called on Catholics to embark on a "new evangelization" that stressed the common good.

"Without the recognition of the common good ... society breaks down and is soon beset by the violence and destruction," said Burke, who drew repeated standing ovations from the crowd of nearly 300. | Dec. 4, 2014 »Read

The “common good” is not evangelization, unless, of course, you are thinking of Christ as the common good. The latter is true, because a society that adopts Christianity is at least in theory (not necessarily in practice, because of fallen human nature) devoted to the common good. But the “common good” sounds to me like the it’s nice to be nice gospel, and is not exactly gripping.

I was disappointed to hear him say this, although the rest of the talk seems to have been very good.

The common good is not the same as the social contract.

“In philosophy, ethics, and political science the common good or common weal is a specific “good” that is shared and beneficial for all or most members of a given community.

“The good that is common between person A and person B may not be the same as between person A and person C. Thus the common good can often change, although there are some things — such as the basic requirements for staying alive: food, water, and shelter — that are always good for all people.”

The social contract, on the other hand:

“The social contract posits that individuals have consented, either explicitly or tacitly, to surrender some of their freedoms and liberties, and submit to the authority of the ruler or magistrate (or to the decision of a majority), in exchange for protection of their remaining rights.”

The difference at first is in “who decides?”

If scoundrels like the Obama administration take it upon themselves to describe “the common good”, we have a mess on our hands. Their use of “the common good” expands until it takes control of all facets of our lives.

However, the social contract is a two-way street. Ceding some of your rights still leaves you with the majority of your rights intact. You only cede anything further than that if *you* choose to, like making a business contract with your neighbor.

Your contract is only between the two of you. The common good does not enter into it.

Burke's three-point evangelization plan:

1. Write a big check and you get into Heaven.
2. Write a big check and you get into Heaven.
3. Write a big check and you get into Heaven.

Don’t expect Dr. Thorne’s comments to make sense.
