My devout Catholic friends believe that God selects the Pope through the Cardinals. Ergo, if you are a devout Catholic, how can you disagree with what the Pope says?

This article is spot on. The pope is Catholic. He lives in Rome. He’s not a Republican or a Democrat living in the USA. What he says will never fit completely into either the Democrat or Republican mold.

The mistranslations are real and some are egregious and some are just ignorance of Latin while assuming that because a couple of letters in a long Latin word are the same as in a word in English they are the same word.

Catholicism: filled the European continent full of Christians, art, science, music, philosophy, architecture, Universities, scholarship, beer, red wine and great cuisines, families, babies (and called the living come-union that "makes babies" a Sacrament) --- all that good stuff known as "Western Civilization" --- and kept the Muslims out for 1400 years.

Now the Pope "controls" a mini-state one-seventh the size of NYC's Central Park, and Europe is supinely post-Christian. How d'you think THAT'S going work out?

If Rome was so interested in science, why was Galileo in fear of his life?

eally give a (b)at’s arse what it’s called. Rome is not in charge of America. It was in charge of Europe for a long time. how did THAT work out?

really worked out very well for Europe, brought it out of the dark ages, establishes NUMEROUS libraries, Monasteries, financed the building of castles to protect local governing bodies, carried the Christian religion to the masses, formulated the Crusades to throw the moslem hoardes out of the area, etc. etc. etc. Without the Catholic church, all of Europe would be moslem...period.

people who have been afraid to return to the Church are making an outreach because of this Pope

What they will find is not really Catholic anymore. They will discover a protestantized, modernized, sort of grass-roots democracy in religion where Catholic morals and traditions are no longer important or even rejected. The types of people being attracted by this pope are specifically those who reject Catholic moral teaching and that is why they avoided the Church up until now.

Once there, the Holy Spirit will take over and during the seven months we have them, the catechumens will be transformed.

At one time this was true. It is no longer true, we know positively, because contemporary "Catholics" reject true Church teaching on issues such as homosexuality in even worse proportions than the general population. The Holy Spirit is no longer in the picture in a contemporary parish and hasn't been for decades.

Only organizations such as SSPX and FSSP (mostly) remain fully Catholic. These groups are the only reason the Church will endure through this mess including a possible anti-pope.

Yes, that is true even including this bad pope / anti-pope.

The Holy Spirit continues to select popes even through this current chastisement of the Church and society at large. In other words, the current pope is a punishment.

Yeah, I’m forever having to cover up the right side. I’ve peeked enough, though, to see that some of those people they seem to be infatuated with are really ugly.

The current Pope being a punishment could be true, but might not be true. No one can understand everything God does. Your opinion is nothing more than your opinion. Same goes for people who like this Pope.
