Duke University’s reversal of today’s plan to broadcast the Muslim call to prayer from its historic chapel tower has reinvigorated a debate over shared worship space.
The Durham, North Carolina-based school had authorized Muslim students to recite the three-minute chant from Duke Chapel on Friday, the weekly day of assembly in Islam, but rescinded the decision this week, following criticism and citing a “serious and credible security threat.”
Franklin Graham, whose ministries (Samaritan’s Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association) are headquartered in North Carolina, attacked the university’s decision and condemned the use of a Christian space by members of another faith.
“It’s wrong because it’s a different god," Graham said. "Using the bell tower, that signifies worship of Jesus Christ. Using (it) as a minaret is wrong.”
Muslim students had gathered for jummah prayers in the chapel’s basement for years, according to CNN reports. The chapel’s website describes it as “a Christian church of uniquely interdenominational character and purpose,” welcoming people of “all faiths and circumstances.”
However, the dean of Duke Divinity School, Richard Hays, raised concerns about the use of the chapel for the Muslim call to prayer if it’s seen as a Christian church (given its history and iconography), rather than a neutral space on campus.
“There are serious questions...about the wisdom and propriety of allowing Duke chapel to be used for this purpose,” he said in a statement. “Despite some common beliefs and traditions, Christianity and Islam stand in significant theological tension with one another.”

IF anyone is threatening anything, then it is almost certainly muslims doing the threatening. But the article is written so as to imply that it is some mysterious “someone else” issuing the threat.

I really don’t know WHY Jihadists would want to have anything to do with a Christian CHURCH. Would Christians want to go and worship in a Mosque, or whatever the hell it is Jihadists use?
This was nothing more than a provocative stunt, and it totally backfired on the university when the people that write the BIG checks let be known that they were unhappy with this. The fact that it was so close to happening is just horrible, IMO.

Muslims regularly take over or destroy areas of worship in conquered land. It is a form of prize taking. The most famous example is the "Dome of the Rock" on the Temple Mount.
Those so-called threats were complete and total bullshit! They might have gotten a few angry emails or phone calls, but what REALLY happened is some people that give them LOTS of money expressed their disapproval, and changed their mind in a hurry. The sound of wallets and checkbooks slamming shut will snap even the most strident liberals back into line.
I’m SURE they’ll try it again sometime in the future though. We all know, leftists NEVER quit. They just retreat for a short time, and regroup to fight another day. They’ll probably find some “judge” to make it happen... (we’ve seen similar things a thousand times before)
Maybe that’s what they meant by “credible threats”.
Some billionaire telling them: “Cut the B.S. or you’re never getting another dime from me” probably carries more weight than an ACTUAL threat of violence.

it is not that Christian spaces are off limits, it is that when a muslim sets foot wherever, it becomes his space. Just look at Temple Mount, an islamic obsenity of religious conquest.
