Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
Character Studies From The Bible
Moses
New International Version (NIV)
6 Then the Lord said to Moses, Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh: Because of my mighty hand he will let them go; because of my mighty hand he will drive them out of his country. 2 God also said to Moses, I am the Lord. 3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself fully known to them. 4 I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, where they resided as foreigners. 5 Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant.
6 Therefore, say to the Israelites: I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. 7 I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. 8 And I will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord.
9 Moses reported this to the Israelites, but they did not listen to him because of their discouragement and harsh labor.
10 Then the Lord said to Moses, 11 Go, tell Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the Israelites go out of his country.
12 But Moses said to the Lord, If the Israelites will not listen to me, why would Pharaoh listen to me, since I speak with faltering lips?

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
There is a hidden treasure in this passage that could be easily missed because of the hesitancy to literally translate the Holy Name of God. The sentence below is where we find it:
God also said to Moses, I am the Lord. 3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself fully known to them.
The Name for God when He spoke to Abraham is "El Shaddai". This Name means "The Almighty" or "All-Sufficient", and is a descriptive Name. The Name that God reveals to Moses is "YHVH", sometimes transliterated as "Yahveh" or "Yehovah". It is a Unique tense of the Hebrew word "To Be" and can be translated as "I AM" or "I WILL BE WHAT I WILL BE", and it thunders through the ages as God's Ultimate Declaration of His Existence, His Eternity, His Omnipotence, His Omniscience, and His Omnipresence. The NAME is so AWESOME in Its implications that Jews do not pronounce It, and prefer to say "HaShem", which means "The Name". This has evolved into the abbreviation "G-d" which you sometimes see here on FR. It is a sign of respect for THE NAME.
By revealing this very personal and existential Name to Moses, God is bringing the Children of Israel into a new relationship with Him, which will be even more personal than it was with Abraham, a Covenant of Deliverance from Bondage and Freedom under the Law.
Some may question this passage, saying that the Covenant Name of God has appeared in Scripture that took place before the Exodus, but one has to remember that Moses wrote the Torah in the forty years after this encounter, and would have used the Name in retrospect.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM! And for the Preservation of the Valiant Israeli Nation!
"The Prophet Moses" Michelangelo Buonarroti

HEN the LORD said unto Moses, Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh: for with a strong hand shall he let them go, and with a strong hand shall he drive them out of his land.
And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am the LORD: |
And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.
And I have also established my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage, wherein they were strangers.
And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians keep in bondage; and I have remembered my covenant.
Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments:
And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.
And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning the which I did swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for an heritage: I am the LORD.
And Moses spake so unto the children of Israel: but they hearkened not unto Moses for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage.
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
Go in, speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, that he let the children of Israel go out of his land.
And Moses spake before the LORD, saying, Behold, the children of Israel have not hearkened unto me; how then shall Pharaoh hear me, who am of uncircumcised lips?
