Valentines Day A Kabbalistic Analysis

There is a very real link between Soul Mates and Valentines Day.

First, some foundation.

Every week in the synagogues a section of the Torah and Prophets are read.
There are special readings for festivals and special Sabbaths.

Shabbat Shekalim (from Wikipedia)

Shabbat Shekalim ("Sabbath [of] shekels" שבת שקלים) read in preparation for Purim, requests each adult male Jew contribute half of a Biblical shekel for the upkeep of the Tabernacle, or mishkan (משכן). The Torah portion Exodus 30:11-16 (the beginning of Parasha Ki Tisa) is read.

Notice Half!

Torah Portion for Shabbat Shekalim

Shemot 30 Orthodox Jewish Bible (OJB)
Exodus

11 And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,

12 When thou takest the census of the Bnei Yisroel after their number, then shall they give every man a kofer nafsho (life price, atoning payment for his nefesh or soul) unto Hashem, when thou numberest them; that there be no negef (plague) among them, when thou numberest them.

13 This they shall give, every one that passeth among them that are pekudim (numbered, counted), half a shekel after the shekel of HaKodesh. (A shekel is twenty gerahs.) A half shekel shall be the terumah (offering) unto Hashem.

14 Every one that passeth among them that are numbered, from twenty years old and above, shall give a terumah (offering) unto Hashem.
15 The oisher (rich man) shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less than half a shekel, when they give a terumah (offering) unto Hashem, to make kapporah for your nefashot.

16 And thou shalt take the kesef hakippurim of the Bnei Yisroel, and shalt appoint it for the Avodat Ohel Mo’ed (Work, Service of the Tent of Appointed Meeting); that it may be a zikaron unto the Bnei Yisroel before Hashem, to make kapporah for your nefashot [see Psalm 49; 1K 1:18-19 OJBC].

Half

In Moshe Idel's book Kabbalah and Eros I discovered this very interesting note.

13. The numerical equivalent of sheqel like nefesh – soul, is 430.
The reference to division of the mediator's concerns between the sensory and intellective world,
i.e., “half for you, half for God,” is to BT, Pesahim, fol. 68b.

Quoting R. Isaac of Acre.

So the gematria of shekel is 430, and for nefesh (soul).

But then I said to no one in particular, why would we give a half shekel? Wouldn't we give a whole one?

It was then that I caught a glimpse into the concept of the soul mate.

Now for some in depth fun!

The Sefer Zohar (Book of Brilliance) goes on at length on the creation/birth of souls, formed as a sphere male and female souls. (See: Genesis 1:27 in the image of ELoHIM, male and female.) The physical form of ADaM is created in Chapter 2.

We're divided above and we are born into this physical realm below.

Half

Now the gematria of shekel is 430 and the same for nefesh (soul).

So what is half of 430?

215, and Valentines Day falls out on 214, (Feb. 14th).

Half

Shabbat Shekalim usually falls out near February 14th but this year it falls exactly on Feb. 14th! Now that is perfect.
214 is not 215 but then again most February's have 28 days, Half!

Cause and Effect!

Thus, Valentines Day could only be set in February and could only fall out on the 14th!

That's why we're here, Tikkun Olam (repair of the world) and finding our soul mate!

Brit Chadashah - New Covenant references

Mattityahu 19, 4 “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”

What G-D joined together! (not man) That verse is so abused.

Mattityahu 22, 29 Yeshua answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven.

Angels are male and female souls that were never separated!
Sometimes they manifest as male, sometimes female.

Wishing everyone a blessed Valentines Day!

Mordechi ben Avram

Notes:

Gematria or gimatria (Hebrew: גימטריא/גימטריה‎ gēmaṭriyā) is a traditional Jewish system of assigning numerical value to a word or phrase, in the belief that words or phrases with identical numerical values bear some relation to each other, or bear some relation to the number itself as it may apply to a person's age, the calendar year, or the like.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gematria

Gematria, basic example

Father, AB, Alef (1) Beit (2) = 3
Mother, AM, Alef (1) Mem (40) = 41
Child, YaLaD, Yud (10) Lamed (30) Dalet (4) = 44
Thus Father + Mother = Child

Very basic.

An interesting series of expositions with an interesting result. Thank you!

(And make certain you spend another shekel for flowers and chocolate!)

No Februarius, Februus, februum, Valentine Mattityahu (Matthew) or number magic for me. No thanks. And I'm not even Jewish. Only my humble opinion.
