("With God all things are possible." Matthew 19:26)
To: All
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison.
For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does (1 Peter 3:18; 1 Peter 4:6).

Jesus did not descend into hell to deliver the damned, nor to destroy the hell of damnation, but to free the just who had gone before him.
[So] the gospel was preached even to the dead. The descent into hell brings the Gospel message of salvation to complete fulfillment. This is the last phase of Jesus messianic mission, a phase which is condensed in time but vast in its real significance: the spread of Christs redemptive work to all men of all times and all places, for all who are saved have been made sharers in the redemption.Mat 17; 1 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. 3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
This poses a "slight " problem " for the belief that the OT Saints were in hell and needed to hear the gospel preached to them

"... Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus....
This poses a "slight " problem " for the belief that the OT Saints were in hell and needed to hear the gospel preached to them."IF there's a "slight" "problem", the problem would be that Scripture contradicted Scripture--- that is, it would be strictly intra-Scriptural--- because the Letter of Peter says,
"For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison.
For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does."
(1 Peter 3:18; 1 Peter 4:6).
But I don't see why there's a problem at all. Jesus reached to Moses and Elijah on Mt. Tabor. That would seem to illustrate and confirm -- not contradict--- that the souls of the dead needed to have the Gospel preached to them.
Don't be put off by the words "in hell." As Msg. Pope explains, "Hell" meaning "Sheol" or "Hades" or "the Abode of the Dead" or "darkness and the shadow of death" doesn't mean, in this context, the Gehenna of the damned.

A total rip in the space time continuum.

Oops, typo: "Jesus reached to" = "Jesus preached to."
Although "reached to" kinda works as well.

Do you believe that they were in the presence of God before Jesus redeemed us?

"Total rip in the space-time continuum" is right. I love this stuff! Look how He's portrayed as using His cross as bridge.

Not to change the subject, but what stays in my mind is the love of God for man and the baptism of the Holy Ghost which Peter spoke of when he said, “This is that, which was spoken of by the prophets. In the last days I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh.” Acts Chapter 2
Whether or not Jesus preached to the dead, which by the way, the Bible says he did, is not as significant to me.

Even Abel’s blood cried out from the ground. Why couldn’t Jesus preach to the dead? : )

He said the gospel would be preached to every creature. I am assuming that holds for the dead as well as the living.

Lazarus in Abraham's bosom.
"Abraham's bosom" is another term for "the Abode of the Dead" or "Limbo of the Patriarchs." (Limbo = threshhold.) They're not in flaming Ghenna.
The rich man is in flaming Gehenna.

After the rich man died, he lifted up his eyes and saw Lazarus in the bosom of Abraham.
