The Catholic Church in Sydney is sending letters to companies that publicly support same-sex marriage, expressing its "grave concern" about their stance.
The Archdiocese of Sydney has targeted some of the 150 businesses that put their names and logos to recent newspaper advertisements supporting gay marriage.
The ABC has seen a copy of one letter addressed to the chairman of partners at Maurice Blackburn law firm, Steve Walsh, from the Archdiocese's business manager Michael Digges.
"It is... with grave concern that I write to you about the Marriage Equality for Australians campaign," it reads.
"You are publically supporting a strategic, political and well-funded campaign designed to pressure the Federal Government into changing the Marriage Act.
"For corporations to speak on such issues... is indeed overstepping their purpose and it is to be strongly resisted."
Maurice Blackburn principal Liberty Sanger said she was not sure what the intention of the letter was, but either way the law firm would not be intimidated.
"Now it may well be that their intention was to try and frighten us into not participating in the debate," she said.

Ambiguous headline wording. I thought first here was another renegade diocese that is pestering (Australian) businesses to embrace SSM... obviously thank goodness they aren’t doing that.
We're on our way to all being criminals...but only...if you're white, a heterosexual and a Christian.
The Lord will not endure to let our visions be that short. We might think we are about the “humble” business of politics but God reminds us our assignment is a heavenly one. Will we view the situation as one of slaves to the devil that God himself desires to be freed, or else of nuisances that we will do what it takes to get out of our face and otherwise forget?
This non-Roman Catholic evangelical APPLAUDS the effort.
Cultural Revolution v2.0
I assume that American counterparts are doing the same... this might be one reason for the microscope like focus on past failures of people associated with FRC which is an ecumenical conservative Christian cause. The devil kicks back. This is par for the course and to be expected; as is said in the Air Force, when you are taking maximum flak you are right over the target.
Just because it is permitted somewhere doesn’t mean it is a right thing to do.
And one bothersome thing about this, is that the question has been framed as one solely of permission. America, and much of Western society, has typically been permissive.
It is not that easy in reality. There are a lot of “not so permissive” consequences to going down that road, a lot of mandates that get triggered. When the “thou mayest” turns into a “thou must” we have trouble.
