High Military Court Will Decide Case of Marine Punished for Bible Verse

Charlotte, N.C., Nov 28, 2015 / 06:13 am (CNA).- The highest U.S. military court will hear the case of a Marine who says her religious freedom was compromised when she was ordered to remove a Bible verse from her work station.

In May 2013, Lance Corporal (LCpl) Monifa Sterling refused to follow a superior's order to remove a Bible verse from her workspace. In ruling on the case earlier this year, the U.S. Navy-Marine Corps Court of Criminal Appeals sided against Sterling, saying that significant damage could be caused by forcing military employees to work in the presence of a religious quotation.

"The implication is clear - the junior Marine sharing the desk and the other Marines coming to the desk for assistance would be exposed to biblical quotations in the military workplace," the court said in its ruling on the case.

"It is not hard to imagine the divisive impact to good order and discipline that may result when a service member is compelled to work at a government desk festooned with religious quotations, especially if that service member does not share that religion."

"The risk that such exposure could impact the morale or discipline of the command is not slight," the court continued. "Maintaining discipline and morale in the military work center could very well require that the work center remain relatively free of divisive or contentious issues such as personal beliefs, religion, politics, etc., and a command may act preemptively to prevent this detrimental effect."

The case centers on an incident two years ago, in which Sterling was stationed at Camp Lejune in North Carolina. A devout Christian, she chose to place at her workstation three slips of paper with the words, "No weapon formed against me shall prosper," a modification of the Bible verse......

Meanwhile a Presidential Candidate sold access to the White House through a money laundering fund and used an unsecured server, and lied the all the American people. What a country. Maybe Putin is correct, Russia is now the moral country of the free world

If it was a verse from the Quran it would be OK.

This is ridiculous since others were permitted to post various personal paraphernalia at their work stations.

It is viewpoint discrimination.

It pretends America is not majority Christian.

It pretends there are not Christians in the military with their own viewpoint.

It far overreaches when it suggests that moral and discipline would be injured by someone having a bible verse at their personal work station.

These people are supposed to be able to fully function in a war setting in different cultures around the world. A bible verse is going to crash their morale? It’s just a ridiculous comment.

Never having run afoul of the UCMJ I have no first hand experience in such matters. However I think I’ve read that certain court-martial cases can be reviewed by SCOTUS (and, perhaps, other Federal “civilian” courts). If I’m correct in that belief this case seems *perfect* for such a review if the military courts rule against the accused.

She received a Bad Conduct Discharge and is ineligible for VA benefits. Also makes it tough to get a job when employers see BCD on the Form DD 214; she currently is unemployed.

Under B. Hussein Soebarkah, atheists and sodomites now rule the military.

When her immediate supervisor - Staff Sergeant Alexander - saw the verses, she ordered Sterling to remove them, saying that she did not like the tone.

Code for atheist lesbian.

Wait.. what? You mean we are turning our such whiney spineless troops that a Bible verse can cause them significant damage? Hope none of them are ever sent into combat

Morality in the Army and Navy

Congress was apprehensive about the moral condition of the American army and navy and took steps to see that Christian morality prevailed in both organizations. In the Articles of War, seen below, governing the conduct of the Continental Army (adopted, June 30, 1775; revised, September 20, 1776), Congress devoted three of the four articles in the first section to the religious nurture of the troops. Article 2 "earnestly recommended to all officers and soldiers to attend divine services." Punishment was prescribed for those who behaved "indecently or irreverently" in churches, including courts-martial, fines and imprisonments. Chaplains who deserted their troops were to be court-martialed.

Significant Damage??! You mean as in losing an eye, a limb, or the ability to walk? What snowflakes we must be harboring.

Is this why no one took notice when Major Hasan signed off on his clinical assessments with "Praise be to Allah?" They didn't want to offend a non Christian?

Truly, it is open season on those who follow a Judeo-Christian faith.

We were trained in reflection of Gen. George Washington’s July 9,1776 General ORder— to so live and act as becomes a Christian soldier— Guess the leadership today has forgotten —or choose to remain ignorant of where we came from -who we are. I thank God Almighty that I am not on active duty in todays godless -sic Secular and queer Military.

Today, under Imam Barack Hussein Obama, the “people of the book” are condemned as the next Caliphate is spread world wide. Its said in the Last Days, the armies of Satan (Islam) will rule the world eventually. That seems to be coming to pass.

Isaiah 54

16 Behold, I have created the smith who blows the fire of coals, and produces a weapon for its purpose. I have also created the ravager to destroy;
17 no weapon that is fashioned against you shall prosper, and you shall confute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD and their vindication from me, says the LORD.”

This should scare the heck out of everybody. They’re trying to say that unless something is the very core of your prescribed belief system it is not protected religious liberty. Christianity doesn’t say you have to believe that “No weapon formed against me shall prosper” so you don’t have any legal protection if you want to do it.

This is EXACTLY what religious leaders were concerned about, with the wording of SCOTUS’ “gay marriage” decision. The military courts are making clear that the regime considers there to be a legal distinction between the freedom to follow A religion - do the things prescribed by that religion - and the freedom to live your LIFE according to your religion. IOW, religion is an institution that you can be associated with, but religion has nothing to do with your everyday life. What you wear, what you think, what you do, is only protected religious liberty if the religious doctrine mandates it.

IOW, only Muslims are free to live their lives according to their religion, because only Islam mandates all that stuff.

The regime is instituting sharia. Make no mistake. We saw this coming and were called crazy for it.

Because just like universities, the military is supposed to be a, you know... safe space.
