This relic of the ages is not under proper conservatorship. It was vacuumed, losing precious pollen residue.
In 2002, under the direction of Madame Mechthild Flury-Lemberg, a self-styled "expert" in ancient fabrics, after being removed from the protective, backing "Holland cloth," the Shroud of Turin was not only vacuumed, it was washed, stretched, had the "still burning" (according to Flury-Lemberg) charred sections cut away, and then ironed! It was then stitched to another, new backing cloth. Flury-Lemberg called this a "conservation" and a "restoration." It was done in secret and without consultation with any other scientists or conservators.
