Winter Holiday Music Is So Jewish
American Thinker ^ | Dec 24, 2017 | Harold Goldmeier

I'm a baby-boomer. American-born Mom was the child of Polish Jews scrapping by through the Great Depression in the land of plenty. They lost everything. Nothing went to waste ever again. We barely threw a garbage bag out once a week.

Her favorite times of year were the baseball and holiday seasons. She loved wintertime songs, so many written by Jewish immigrants and their firstborn. The music reminded her of good times during a rocky early life. Judy Garland's rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" captivated Mom. Carl Sigman's 1949 lyrics to

"A Marshmallow World," performed by Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin, Arthur Godfrey, and half-dozen more artists, always brought a smile to Mom's face:

It's a marshmallow world in the winter When the snow comes to cover the ground It's time for play, it's a whipped cream day I wait for it the whole year round...

Oh, The world is your snowball, see how it grows That's how it goes whenever it snows The world is your snowball just for a song Get out and roll it along...

Mom was a true-blue American tomboy, loving baseball. Mom's spirit of "I'll do it myself" and her determination never to complain, especially about America, were her declarations of independence. She married a German Jewish immigrant in the 1940s. He spoke only German. Mom cut the grass on hot summer days after watching father do it in a suit and tie. Mom spoke English and a smattering of Yiddish. I can't explain how they hooked up, but they thrived on mutual respect and love.

Mom's kitchen smelled of fresh cooking and cigarettes.

Writing songs about holidays is much better than cutting off the heads of people because they don't think about holidays according to your orthodoxy.

Jews like Gershwin and Irving Berlin were truly musical geniuses.

The movie White Christmas! It’s corny but I love it.

What a cute article. I'll give "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" more respect, now!

Crisco was a cheap, white, Proctor & Gamble vegetable shortening introduced in 1911. Its ingenious marketing tag proclaimed that the "Hebrew race has been waiting 4,000 years" for Crisco.

Heh, who knew? I cook with corn oil; I use Crisco only for greasing pans.

Crisco is very unhealthy. People didn’t know it then.

My favorite version of "Marshmallow World" is by Vaughn Monroe & His Orchestra, with the Moon Maids, from 1950. You can listen to it here

"Somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true."--Yip Harburg, 1939

O they tell me of a home far beyond the skies,
O they tell me of a home far away;
O they tell me of a home where no storm clouds rise,
O they tell me of an unclouded day.
--Josiah K Atwood, 1880

"The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spoke to me, 'He who rules over men righteously, who rules in the fear of God, is as the light of the morning when the sun rises, A morning without clouds, When the tender grass springs out of the earth, through sunshine after rain." --2 Samuel 23:3-4

" There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever."--Revelation 22:5

Middle East and terrorism, occasional political and Jewish issues Ping List. High Volume

If you’d like to be on or off, please FR mail me.

In fairness, songwriters should be forced to compose head chopping songs for Ramadan. No different than forcing a baker to make gay marriage cakes. I'm sure there are rappers who'd be happy to do it.

I can imagine the titles:

Behead Yazidis would make a great doowop tune,

My Sex Slave Puts Out ‘cause She’s Tied Down would go well to My Baby Does the Hanky Panky, and

Christians Roasting On An Open Fire needs no introduction.

Anyone else?

Doubt I’ll find the time, but when posting this I was thinking about dashing down the street in my one seat rental truck, and All I Want for Christmas.... is too easy. But roasting Christians on an open fire, probably the best. Though today isn’t the time. Next Muslim holiday, when these things will be happening. I pray they’re not happening tonight. Not only Muslim holidays characterized by violence. Note the Christmas markets in Europe canceled this year.

They can’t just erect some cement crash barriers, perhaps with trees planted in them for after the season? These Europeans know nothing about living elegantly in defiance.

Crisco was a very big deal when I was a kid in Israel. We had ifffy electricity and iffy supply chain, even in the 1970s. Having a fat you could safely expose to poor storage was a huge deal.

But yes terrible for you. We’ve switched to olive oil (native) and real butter, and just went gladly back to being more careful.

That’s very interesting, thanks. I hadn’t really given it much thought. Did you have something like Vegemite to get your B-vitamins, too?

Not sure about !-1s but humus in all its forms was and remains the equivalent of peanut butter.
