The honeymoon, as it were, is apparently over.
A day after Pope Francis grabbed headlines by pronouncing two flight attendants man and wife while flying 36,000 feet over Chile, the conservative Catholic commentariat on Friday questioned the legitimacy of the impromptu sacrament and warned it could cheapen the churchs marriage preparation down the line.
Do you know whats a marriage ripe for annulment? tweeted the traditionalist blog Rorate Caeli. One celebrated apparently on a whim in an airplane whose celebrant cannot even be sure if parties are validly baptized.
For those who missed the news, Francis on Thursday presided over what the Vatican said was the doctrinally and canonically legitimate wedding of Paula Podest and Carlos Ciuffardi, two flight attendants from LATAM flight 1250 that brought the pope, his delegation and traveling press from Santiago to the northern city of Iquique.

How long before the pope marries two men at a Hawaii beach ?
The Popes airborne nuptials
Francis got married? Sadly, wouldnt be surprised.
Normally a baptismal certificate is required, if they say they’re Catholic. Also, some counseling or class sessions. But he’s the POPE! He can do whatever he wants! Be thankful that it wasn’t a gay couple!
At least it was a man and a woman...this time.
OK, I have been married for 30 years, but was just married in the church a year ago.
First off, you have to be married IN the church, unless you have approval from the Bishop, but I would have to assume the Pope is ok there.
The big problem is that they have to go to confession first (both of them) and have no sex till the wedding is convalidated. The Pope obviously is ordained, so he can hear a confession, if he did there is nothing that is outside of the norm here as far as I know, and I’ve had to get a pretty good grasp of marriages policy, annulments, valid marriages, etc in the last couple of years.
If a person is over a certain age at baptism, you can sign for yourself as to the date of baptism. If they were baptized Catholic, believe me, the Church has a record of it!
What? Are you saying a Catholic Church will take a persons word that they were baptized without documentation? Never heard this before
Technically a confession is not needed for a valid celebration of a wedding. It is highly suggested, can 1065. For fruitfulness.
But when laws don’t matter anymore, whats the point?
It is if you’ve been living together as husband and wife.
Yes, I was baptized in a Baptist Church when I was 12. Protestant paperwork is often non existent regarding baptism, as mine was. If you are over a certain age, you can sign it yourself with the date, where it was done, and the minister’s name. I did mine that way myself, my Mom had the date, but the church had no records of anything.
The form has a spot for two witnesses of the baptism, but states if you are over a certain age, you can sign it yourself. I just did this about three years ago, we had our marriage in a Catholic Church April 15 of 2017, we were married in 1987.
