During his conversation with the Russian people today, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin cited with approval the conclusion of “certain theoreticians who say that Orthodox Christianity is much closer to Islam than Catholicism is,” something that he suggests should be the basis for restoring national concord.
In his responses to questions, Putin stressed that “Caucasians must not be afraid to live in Moscow or Russians to live in the North Caucasus.” Instead, he continued, “all citizens of Russia of whatever faith or nationality must recognize that we have a single common Motherland."
The simplification of Huntington’s ideas in the intervening years has led many in both Russia and the West to ignore the distinction between Eastern and Western Christendom.
But as Putin suggests, there are major differences, perhaps the greatest of which is the caesaro-papist tradition of Orthodoxy and the absence of that tradition in Western Christendom. And that means the two Christian traditions are in a very different position with regard to Islam, which like Orthodoxy but unlike Catholicism calls for a unity of state and religious power.
“From the very beginning,” the Russian leader said, “Russia was built up as a multi-national and multi-confessional state.” And after saying that “the state exists to serve the interests of the majority,” he added, “you know, we have Eastern Christianity and certain theoreticians say that it is much closer to Islam than Catholicism is.”
Ever since Samuel Huntington’s “Clash of Civilizations” article and book appeared, many commentators and political leaders have talked about the clash between Christianity as a whole and Islam, even though the late Harvard scholar did distinguish between Eastern or Orthodox Christianity and Western Christianity which includes Catholicism and Protestantism.

If Pres. Putin really believes that his church is AT ALL close to Islam, he either doesn’t understand Christianity or else he is totally ignorant of just how evil Islam is...
perhaps he could have a staff aide summarize the Koran and all its vicious anti-Christian, anti-Jewish passages for him.. or else, he could just pick up a good history book about how Islamics have already conquered 56 countries ....and yes, they’re working at Mother Russia, too
With its glorious and continual invocation of the Trinity, with its vast appreciation of the Incarnation of Christ, with its rich sacramental theology, with its omnipresent veneration of icons, relics, sacramentals, shrines, with its love of the All-Pure and Ever-Virgin Theotokos, Mother of God --- it is absolutely incompatible with Islam, theologically, in every way.
Of course Putin sees it all through the eyes of Machiavellian maneuvers. If Russia was full of "Friends' Meeting Houses", he'd say the Quran was Quaker.

In some practical applications of the religions aspects, perhaps, but when comparing core tenets, the two faiths couldn’t be further apart.
In mathematics when you check your answer, the first thing you do is simply look at your answer and see if the number makes sense compared to your input. If you multiply 3 x 8 and your answer is 985, you don’t need to know the answer is 24 to know that you’re solution is simply nonsense. The same goes with both those two religions. Both of them are nearly the exact opposite of the life and example set by Jesus. One chops off your head, the other is a medieval monarchy and a massive wealthy international organization that protects evil people who give it the little boys right up the wazoo.
I think you are looking to deeply at his comments. He is trying to stop his his subjects from murdering each other in their sleep.

When Russian Christians start demanding that Muslims convert or die and make their women wear burkhas, then I’m willing to reconsider Putin’s idea. Until then it is silly.
Please stop making a false distinction between Obama and Putin especially as it pertains to the above. They are both equally bad in these regards.
