The appointment of Thomas and sticking with him is probably one of the most important things to happen to the Supreme Court for conservatives — next to Scalia.

He also nominated and got confirmed the very liberal David Souter.

There might be some darker things about GHW Bush that most of us don’t know about.

Let Lionel enlighten you about the Bush Family.

Comment 22 on this thread makes an interesting point about the tax cuts, basically that he was too trusting, with some added info that helps make the case.

I wish all presidents had seen the hippie slime for the Sodom and Gomorrah corrosion of society that it was. Most didn’t and didn’t care to muddy themselves fighting hedonist loons. We need to now. They should have then (if people knew what kind of people were behind the war against Nixon the country would have rallied to his defense - see also https://www.nytimes.com/1995/07/27/obituaries/baruch-korff-81-rabbi-and-defender-of-nixon.html). That doesn’t take away from the good they did.

Bush Sr. was great in his time.

You say that because you know very little about the real Bush family. The truth is we know so very little about the incestious families that we chose to rule over us. Look into the life of Prescott Bush and tell me how great he was.

He was also the first to battle someone who ended up eroding societal values and that too is a great credit to him.

Chekhov's Dud.

Don't keep us guessing.

A history of George H.W. Bush's relationship with Planned Parenthood

“One of the chief co-sponsors of the Title X statute, which allocates millions of federal tax dollars to Planned Parenthood and other family planning organizations, was Rep. George H.W. Bush (R-TX)”

The first of two elections against a certain ClinToon was fought by him. I deal with the unfortunate peace he made with him in comments.

Look into the life of Prescott Bush and tell me how great he was.

Prescott Bush was the Treasurer for Planned Parenthood.

That came out when he was running for the Senate in Connecticut in 50' and he lost the election.

Then there is the legend that he and other members of Skull and Bones from Yale dug up Geronimo's body and removed his skull. (Unconfirmed)

92 was Bush v Clinton
96 was Dole. I prefer Dole on almost everything, but this is about the good works of Bush, and there were many.

Ridiculous not to credit Bush for sticking by Thomas, he could have pulled the nomination.

Bush had a poor reelection campaign the media ganged up on him, but he lost largely because of Perot.

Bush stood by Gorbachev and Yeltsin against the hardline Russian coup.

Bush also insisted on the reunification of Germany when everyone was saying we’d have to keep the Russians in East Germany.

Bush faced a Democrat Congress his entire presidency, which is why he agreed to $1 in tax increases for every $3 in budget reductions. This resulted in budget surpluses, including in the Clinton years.

The coalition against Iraq was masterful, and people forget how vehemently every step was opposed by the media.

“Great in his time”......What in the hell is wrong with you? Good God, pay attention! The New World Order Bush folks are pure scum! To think that there are FReepers who think these Globalist pukes are okay is really something! Grow up sonny! Get a clue!

At the 1988 Dem convention, Ann Richards was chosen as "The Hatchet Man" = the speaker who gets the coveted job of attacking the other party's nominee with a speech written by the best writers their party can recruit, a speech filled with the nastiest sarcastic zinger put-downs they can think of.

In her exaggerated Texas drawl, she enumerated the list of the worst verbal gaffes GHWB had made in his life, and accused him of being a spoiled rich kid of a US Senator. The "big zinger" in the Hatchet Speech combined these two themes:

"Pooowor Geooorge! He jus' cain't he'p hisself! He was bawrn with a silver fooowot in his maowwwwth!"

For years after, Dan Rather would play that clip on CBS "news" shows ad nauseum, and never failed to fall off his chair and roll on the floor with tears of laughter streaming down his cheeks, just to hear again for the 1000th time what surely must be the funniest line ever written in all creation, or at least according to Rather.

And the frequency of its being played was ramped up in 1994, when Bush's son, derisively referred to as "Shrub" by the Texas Dem/Media establishment - including Richards & Rather, was running what looked to be an impossible campaign to unseat Gov Ann Richards. Whenever the economy is doing great - as it was in Texas that year, it's a safe bet that a scandal-less incumbent Governor will ALWAYS cruise to an easy re-election.

But the conventional wisdom disappeared that year. Dubya beat her by a huge margin. And the next day, as reported by Rush, the joke going around Texas was ---

"Pooowor Ann! She jus' cain't he'p herself! She woke up this mawrnin' with a silver boooot in her butt!"

I've always loved stories of come-uppance like that!

Well said E3. I can’t believe there are FReepers talking good about this SOB Bush. Not to mention his little, ahem, drug bizz, with Billy Boy Clinton out of Mena airport in the 1980’s.

Ridiculous not to credit Bush for sticking by Thomas, he could have pulled the nomination.

He made no public statements of encouragement of Thomas. No statements blasting the Dems for their hatchet job. Thomas survived on his own, and the Dems ultimately confirmed him because they were overplaying their hand.

Bush had a poor reelection campaign the media ganged up on him, but he lost largely because of Perot.

Perot and Buchanan were the forerunners of what Trump is now. They were hitting on issues that Bush and the GOPe were ignoring. Working and middle-class families losing their jobs to globalism.

Bush stood by Gorbachev and Yeltsin against the hardline Russian coup.

I don't care about Gorbachev and Yeltsin.

Bush also insisted on the reunification of Germany when everyone was saying we’d have to keep the Russians in East Germany.

Who is everyone? Who was advocating that Germany remain divided?

Bush faced a Democrat Congress his entire presidency

Yeah so Reagan faced a Democratic House and they still passed his tax cuts. It's called leadership, which The Wimp didn't have.

which is why he agreed to $1 in tax increases for every $3 in budget reductions. This resulted in budget surpluses, including in the Clinton years.

Still was stupid to break his promise.

The coalition against Iraq was masterful, and people forget how vehemently every step was opposed by the media.

The coalition was a joke and is responsible for all the turmoil and refugees flooding Europe that is happening now.

Thank you. I have absolutely no love for the Bushes. Don’t care about them, wish I can take back my votes for them. I’ve stayed off the GHWB threads slobbering all over Poppy. They are the epitome of Rockefeller Republicanism.

“Kemp should have been Reagan’s VP.”

I was thinking the other day about GHW Bush and how he represented the Republican Party before Reagan, and also, ironically, after Reagan.

Re Kemp. Kemp was a free trade, open borders, globalist neocon = Bush Republican.

Bush stood by Gorbachev and Yeltsin against the hardline Russian coup.

The Coup collapsed thanks to resistance from Moscow citizens.

Bush also insisted on the reunification of Germany when everyone was saying we’d have to keep the Russians in East Germany.

German Reunification was led by Helmut Kohl, if anything Bush's insistence that a reunified Germany remain in NATO made it more difficult, that was quite unpopular in Germany.

The collapse of the Soviet Union meant Yeltsin had little money left for the Russian military, the last of which left Germany in 1994 ahead of schedule and leaving behind a toxic waste dump.

Bush faced a Democrat Congress his entire presidency, which is why he agreed to $1 in tax increases for every $3 in budget reductions. This resulted in budget surpluses, including in the Clinton years.

Read My Lips has to be the biggest unforced gaffe by an American President in the past 50 years...

The coalition against Iraq was masterful, and people forget how vehemently every step was opposed by the media.

And this wonderful coalition turned out to be the reason given for Saddam being left in power in 91'.
