Few know that there is a group known as "secret cardinals" (Cardinal in pectore). This is when the Pope elevates someone to the College of Cardinals but because they might be subject to persectution he does not, cannot, make it public. So it's a secret to be revealed by the Pope only when it's safe, if that ever happens in the Pope's lifetime. The secret dies with the Pope when he passes, the man is never revealed to be a Cardinal.
Except this Pope isn't worried about protecting his clergy from persecution, he's helping the Chinese to get them totally under wraps. I've never imagined such a thing would be done by a Pope. It's unfathomable. It shows what he really values.
