A "climate of heightened sensitivity" and increasingly broad definitions of 'hate crime' are putting freedom of speech and belief at risk, the Catholic Church in Scotland has warned.
The Church said there needed to be "room for debate and a robust exchange of views" as it warned that holding to Catholic beliefs, particularly on marriage or sexuality, may soon be deemed "an attempt to stir up hatred".
The warning was made in a submission to the Scottish Government's consultation on hate crimes following a review last year by Lord Bracadale.
The consultation, which closed last month, asked members of the public for their responses to Lord Bracadale's report on hate crimes in Scotland in which he recommended that a protection of freedom of expression provision be included in any new legislation relating to stirring up offences.
The Church welcomed the proposed protection for freedom of expression but said it was concerned that the definition of hate was becoming "contentious and open to misuse".
"Care must be taken to allow room for debate and a robust exchange of views, ensuring that 'hate' doesn't include the kind of ordinary discourse where people reasonably hold divergent views," the submission states.
"The fundamental right to freedom of expression, and the right of an individual to hold and express opinions, even if they are considered by some to be controversial or unwelcome must be upheld."
The Church further warned that changes to hate crime laws may hinder, rather than help, community relations.

I wouldn’t be surprised to find that Frankie put the politicians up to this.
A South African court just ruled against a Christian Church for refusing to recognize homosexual “marriage”.
Why not debate the merits of the laws of gravity as they inhibit my ability to fly at will....
The bigger crime is priests raping little boys, the few heterosexual priests using convents as harems and other pedophile priests using institutions for the vulnerable as their personal sexual playground.
Ask muzzies if they are for or against same sex marriage? Wanna bet they are exempt from a hate crime?
As a Catholic who spent 10 years in parochial school making my faith a hate crime will cause me to fight tooth and nail against the leftist scum who try. Just Try Marxists!
That being said I will also fight tooth and nail to fix the church I have been in for seventy years. The boy rapist priests and the current Marxist pope and his phalanx of Marxist Cardinals need to go. This is the true problem with the church.
After years of compromising with the Left the Church is just now realizing the Lefts endgame?
Can’t wait until the LGBTQRSUVWXYZ run up against Islam.
It already is a crime. Have you missed people being arrested for preaching Christianity? It is just a matter of time for the slow sword to penetrate the shield. More and more Catholics will be arrested but it will happen slowly so the “frog gets boiled”. No one seems to raise a finger when criminal acts by a government happen slowly over time.
Just look at the murder of 60+ million babies over time in the USA since 1973 and countless other baby murders worldwide.

Its going to be back to the catacombs before too long
That’s been the cycle of history for Christians, across nations, for 2000 years.
It already is... All religions but the religion of “communism” is being persecuted.
Not our fault if you haven't upgraded.
Wow! Handle snakes much?
;^)
Any biblical beliefs. And any that confess and practice them will suffer persecution. It’s a promise.
Heavenly Father help us to stand in the evil day.
Yes, it was the Dutch Reformed Church. And all churches should take heed: the reason the judges gave was that briefly, several years ago, same-sex “marriages” had been permitted in that church, and after a few years, they went back to their original position of forbidding it. So the court argued that if it was a changeable stance, it did not represent anything of innate religious significance and was no more than an opinion and thus subject to anti-discrimination laws.
This means churches - including Francis’ new improved Catholic Church - that are dabbling in this LGBQT(fill in initials of your choice) stuff should think twice.
Not really a case of compromising but a planned program of infiltration by communists that started back in the 1920’s.
Just as predicted ...
Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
2 Timothy 3:1-5 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.
>>>Church fears holding Catholic beliefs may soon be a ‘hate crime’<<<
If the current leadership of the RCC has their way it will be.
