Actually children in India have less drug addiction problems than in United States. My guess is the main reason for that is children still fear and respect elders there. Plus people have more community connection and less isolation in comparison to US.
That reminds me that Mother Teresa of Calcutta once said that loneliness -- people starving for love, feeling that nobody wants them --- is the most terrible kind of poverty, and the West has it worse than India.
She said loneliness is the leprosy of the West.
The caste system in India is brutal. There is much abuse of wives and children. Not a great way to live
I think fear and respect play a part, but also
1. A sense of shame
2. No counter culture movement as in the 60s
3. Not YET a breakdown in religious mores
