VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis on Wednesday said politicians should not close ports to desperate migrants, speaking after a court got a green light to pursue an investigation of Matteo Salvini, Italy's anti-immigrant former interior minister.
"In the whole world, men and women migrants face risky voyages to escape violence, to escape, war, to escape poverty," Francis said during his weekly general audience at the Vatican.
"Many times, they are not allowed to disembark in ports ... they are exploited by criminal traffickers, today! Some politicians treat them like numbers and see them as a threat," he said, partly departing from his prepared remarks.
The comments by the pope, who has made defense of migrants a key part of his pontificate, came two days after an Italian Senate committee decision that could lead to a trial of Salvini for alleged kidnapping of migrants.
In July 2019 Salvini, who had staked his political credibility on a vow to curb immigration from Africa, ordered 131 rescued migrants to remain on a ship off Sicily for six days until other European states agreed to take them in.
The court in the Sicilian city of Catania -- a special tribunal in charge of investigations into ministers -- recommended last month that he stand trial on charges of illegally detaining migrants on the coast guard ship Gregoretti.

The Pope didn’t notice the “migrants” are being used by the Mafia.
“And ignore that coronavirus thing” the stalinist pontiff continued “the concept of quarantine is such an irresponsible medieval concept.”
Even if the migrants have Coronavirus?
Just take them to Vatican City. If they won’t let them in, provide ladders to scale the 30-foot walls.
I have friends and family in Sicily.
People think that they are like the neighborhood mafiosi here who do to an extent keep their neighborhood safer. But at a horrible cost to others.
The Sicilian mafiosi may care about their immediate neighbors but just like in the US, they care nothing about the govt or the people in general.
I have deceased relatives who were gangsters and knew guys growing up who were.
They are out for themselves and usually their family.
Even that’s not a 100 percent given sometimes.
If they are so noble, why did the muslim migrants leave behind the women and children? The men of war age moved to the West and raped.
Someone should gag this jerk.
This is the Italian Deep State trying to silence Matteo Salvini with a bogus charge of “detaining immigrants” when, in reality, he was doing his job as Interior Minister. This would be like the Department of Homeland Security head in the USA being charged with a crime for closing the border. If they silence Salvini (it carries up to 15 years in prison) then Italy is lost. He is their last hope to stop the mass migration into Italy.
To hell with this fraud of a Pope. Viva Salvini!
