School Bans 3rd Grader's 'Jesus Loves Me' Mask, Threatens Suspension

A Mississippi family is alleging religious discrimination against their third-grade daughter’s elementary school after officials there forced her to remove her face mask with the phrase “Jesus Loves Me.”

Matthew and Jennifer Booth filed a federal lawsuit Monday against Simpson County School District in Mississippi because their daughter, Lydia, was ordered to remove the mask on Oct. 13 and replace it with one her school, Simpson Central, supplied. All students are required to wear masks to help slow the spread of Covid-19.

Booth could be suspended if she continues wearing her faith-themed mask. Alliance Defending Freedom is representing the family.

The lawsuit says the school permits “students to convey a multitude of messages concerning unlimited topics on their masks” such as “Black Lives Matter” and the New Orleans Saints’ logo but forced Booth to remove her “Jesus Loves Me” mask, even though the suit says it had “caused no disruptions.”

Of course. Joe Biden would support this, and suggest an allah loves me mask.

President Harris told him so.

I am Jewish and this mask doesn’t bother me in the least. OTOH, an arm of the State denying this girl her right to both freedom of speech and religion is incredibly disturbing. Hopefully, she will wear the mask again, be suspended, and a few months later have a couple million dollars in a trust fund controlled by her parents.

1st amendment. The only way to ban such a mask is to ban all clothing with words printed on it.

Rights are limited in public schools. And that’s because a public school is not a sidewalk, or a park. So I have no problem with this ban, as long as ALL masks with a message are banned.

Before anyone disagrees, consider this. Should a mask - or a shirt - saying “Mohammed is a True Prophet” - be allowed? I think not. I would not want my child to be exposed to such a message. So yeah, keep political and religious slogans out of public schools.

Side note:
I’m old enough to remember prayers in public schools. My teachers would say a brief, nondenominational prayer before every lunch. I kinda liked that. Does that contradict what I just said above? I guess so.

Just put her in a hijab, and change the mask to Muhammad (peace be upon him) Loves Jesus (pbuh), and no one would *dare* ask her to remove it.

Yes, absolutely. Your 1st Amendment rights do not end at the school doors if what you are doing is not disruptive.

I remember when I was in grade school. Every year every child
was given a New Testament Bible....they were tiny reddish colored books.

I still have a couple of them somewhere in this houseful of junk.

We are on the wrong path....

Amen. It is usually liberals who don’t even believe in G-d who tell us that Jewish People are “offended” by this or that.

A half dozen Virginia localities had on their ballots attempts to relocate Confederate monuments away form County Courthouse grounds. All such efforts FAILED by large majorities.

https://results.elections.virginia.gov/vaelections/2020%20November%20General/Site/Referendums.html

Example:
“Shall Halifax County relocate the Confederate monument from the County courthouse grounds?” Yes-41.31%; No-59.69%.

Warren County: 76.41% NO
Tazewell County: 87.44% NO
Franklin COunty: 70.02% NO
Charles City County: 55.11% NO

Lunenburg County asked the reverse question: “Shall the monument honoring the memory of the Lunenburg soldiers and women during the Civil War REMAIN on Lunenburg Courthouse property?” Yes: 71.19%

That’s encouraging.

What it may prove is that the values of the average person haven’t changed that much. Unfortunately the so called activists and rioters on the other side seem to have greater influence on our so called leaders than the quieter normal person, even though they’re outnumbered.

We have to counter their activism and street presence with our own. Unfortunately we’re not predisposed to such actions - it’s not in our genes.

The school should be thanking her for showing up to be counted in attendance. $$$$$$$$$.

I am really old-fashioned. I think all of these slogan dust-ups in the schools (whatever the message) is people needing attention, using children as “free speech” targets.

The “adults” are more juvenile than the children, but at least a 3rd grader wearing a “Jesus Loves Me” mask is appropriate for a 3rd grader, unlike a racist political BLM mask. What’s that kid know, save the learned chip on his shoulder or worse.

That all said, I like the idea of a hamantashen mask. One right in the middle of the mask. PUR-fect on a number of levels. :)

Lydia announcing “Jesus Loves Me” is actually a perfectly normal statement in the grand scheme of things.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

How sad to read about this infringement on her First Amendment right. Is it time to look for another place to live?
The girl could be a twin of my 7 year old granddaughter who lives in Virginia.
I move to suspend the School Board, Superintendent, Principal and the teacher!
