The devil didn’t sit around for a 100+ years before launching confusion projects in churches. Paul was warning of false doctrines present in his time.

I think God Himself told us to be monotheistic.

Isaiah 45:5 - I am the LORD, and there is no other; there is no God but Me. I will equip you for battle, though you have not known Me
