Pope Emeritus Benedict is 'very sick,' Pope Francis reveals

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI is suffering from ill health, Pope Francis announced Wednesday as he finished his weekly general audience.

“I would like to ask all of you for a special prayer for Pope Emeritus Benedict, who, in silence, is sustaining the Church," Pope Francis told attendees.

He added, "Let us remember him. He is very sick, asking the Lord to console and sustain him in this witness of love for the Church, until the end."

The Holy See Press Office later confirmed the pontiff's announcement and said Benedict has taken a turn for the worse medically, according to the Catholic News Agency.

“I can confirm that in the last few hours there has been a worsening due to advancing age," said Matt Bruni of the Holy See Press Office. "The situation at the moment remains under control, constantly followed by doctors."

Benedict was elected to the papacy in 2005. He later claimed that he prayed he would not be chosen but was forced to accept what he believed God calling him to service.

In February 2013, at 85 years old, Benedict became the first pope in centuries to resign from his post.

"I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise," he said at that time.

Despite his optimism, the pope emeritus has expressed exhaustion at the longevity of his own life post-papacy.

Last year, Prefect of the Papal Household Archbishop Georg Gänswein recounted conversations he has had with the aging former pontiff, noting that no other pope has lived to 94 years of age.

“He tells me, ‘I’m nearly 94 years old, what do you want from me?’ He didn’t expect to live to this age,” Gänswein said. “He’s even told me he didn’t imagine it would take so long to travel the distance from the end of his pontificate to meet Saint Peter at the Gate.”

I never have heard exactly how or why he got forced out. Normally doesn’t a Pope pretty much stay until death?

I think he was told that he had Alzheimer's back in 2012. I just inferred this from some of his remarks and then about a year ago, he directly stated it. He was bamboozled and directly disobeyed at every turn by liberals who were there to serve him for the Church. Jorge Bergoglio knew before it was public, and privately expressed to someone “do you know what this means?” I think the “fix was in” for Bergoglio, and not for the good of the Church.

I believe so. There was rumors that there are two popes. The real pope Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and Francis
Benedict never resigned or gave up the position.
I don't know who has what power of what or if it's true. Now a days I don't disregard anything.

You abandon the Church everyday with your sins. We all fall short of the Glory of God.

Pray for charity.

Benedict needed to resign in accordance with Church Canon law but failed to do so.

Accordingly he is still pope.

I have been hearing that both Popes are ‘severely ill’ for years. I think we were in Obama’s second term, when the Waiting Game began.

Where in Canon law does it say a pope can resign?

Can. 332§2. If it happens that the Roman Pontiff resigns his office, it is required for validity that the resignation is made freely and properly manifested but not that it is accepted by anyone.

I’m not doubting you, but I’d love to see for myself where Benedict stated he was told he has Alzheimer’s. Because that would be a slam dunk that his resignation was invalid.

In any case, fasten your seatbelt. It’s gonna be a bumpy ride.

The author, Timothy Nerozzi, is ignorant and helpless. Newsflash: Pope Benedict XVI is our pope and Bergoglio is a poor imitation of a Catholic. When Pope Benedict XVI, the brave Cardinals in Rome will get to work and Bergolio will be clueless as usual. Since 2013 we have been deprived of the brilliant, weekly homilies of PBXVI. His books are still brilliant. Nothing Bergoglio says or writes is interesting.
