Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged to safeguard the “daughters of Manipur” following the horrific gang rape of two Christian women by an alleged Hindu group.

A chilling video circulating online shows the women, stripped of their dignity, being molested by a group of Hindu men before being forcefully led into a field where they were reportedly violated, as per The Times.

The victims, one in her 20s and another in her 50s were seen imploring the mob for mercy amidst the escalating ethnic violence in the state. When the younger victim’s father and brother intervened, the mob beat them to death/.

Modi voiced his condemnation, “I assure the nation, no guilty will be spared. The law will take its course with all its might. What happened with the daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven.” He urged state government leaders to reinforce women’s safety and labeled the May 4 incident “a blemish on any civilized nation.”

He expressed deep anguish and fury, stating, “My heart is filled with pain and anger.”

This brutal incident has occurred amidst a backdrop of escalating tensions threatening to plunge the nation into civil war. According to reports, nearly 250 Christian churches, mostly Baptist, have been destroyed and burned down in the last 3 months.

The UK DailyMail report this incident as “ethnic clashes”, not reporting the victims were Christian.

This is a mix of ethnic and religious clashes.

The Nagas and Mizos are hill based nations who are nearly 100% Christian (mostly Baptist) and they converted from animism (not Hinduism) in the 1800s. They speak a Tibeto-Burmese language. Note that the Nagas and Mizos have their own states adjoining Manipur

The Meiteis/Manipuris are a valley nation who also speak a Tibeto-Burmese language, but being in the valley they had continuous connections with Indo-Europeans from at least 500 BC, so adopted Hinduism - there is no trace of their prior animism. Going by the adoption levels, Hinduism seems to have been adopted at least by AD 100 - not a Vedic Hinduism but a Vaishnavite (Vishnu worshipping)

And here is the map of the area

Manipur is a hill state in northeast India, bordering Myanmar to its east and south. The central area is the Imphal Valley occupying about 10% of the land area of the state, which is mainly populated by the Meitei people. All developmental activities are concentrated in the Imphal Valley. The surrounding hills which are undeveloped are inhabited by hill tribes, who are classified as Kukis in the southern portion and Nagas in the northeastern portion

The Meiteis, who are largely Hindus, make up 53% of the population. They are barred from settling in the hilly regions of the state except with the permission of the local district councils, as per the Land Reform Act of Manipur

The tribal population, consisting of predominantly Christian Kukis and the Nagas, forms about 40% of the state's 3.5 million people. They reside in the reserved hill regions consisting of the rest of the 90% of the state. The tribal population is not prohibited from settling in the valley region

Map of the religious distribution in Manipur. Hindus (orange) and Muslims (green) are predominant in the dense urban valley region, whereas Christians (blue) predominate in the sparsely populated tribal hilly regions
