The boy accused of stabbing a bishop as he delivered a sermon had been mentally 'poisoned' in the lead-up to the alleged attack, Muslims who prayed with him have claimed.
The 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, allegedly lunged at Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel, 53, and stabbed him in the head at Christ The Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley, in Sydney's west, at about 7pm on Monday.
Father Isaac Royel, who serves in the Assyrian ministry at St Shimun Bar Sabbae and St Mary Cathedral, was among many parishioners who attempted to intervene - and as a result he allegedly suffered lacerations and a shoulder wound.
In the aftermath of the incident, a WhatsApp audio message circulated among Sydney's Muslim community allegedly identifying the boy accused, The Australian reported.
'Sadly, sadly that (alleged attacker) prayed today (with us) … These kids have been poisoned by a monster,' the audio message said.
'This kid has been poisoned,' the message continued. 'This kid, as soon as I saw (the videos), it's him. Keep calm, keep patient, inshallah.'
Police declared the alleged stabbing, which played out on livestream, an act of terror - with federal and state police alleging it was motivated by religious extremism.
However, given the accused knifeman's young age, some have questioned the decision to brand the incident as terror-related, and insisted that mental health may have been the overarching cause.
NSW Premier Chris Minns, however, said he is comfortable with the police decision.
'It's really important to know, and I made this clear to community leaders that I spoke with today, that this is not a designation about the person of interest currently in police custody,' he told ABC's 7.30 Report.

I won't paint them all with the same brush but I will ask they find out, if they can, who was influencing him.
They always have some excuse not to call it terrorism.

Yes I saw the video. I’m looking at his body frame mostly his waist. He’s a middle teen. I know what is throwing you off and that is he has facial hair but I knew guys in HS who had full beards but their parents’ said they were “too young to shave” so they came to school looking like Grizzly Adams.
