'VAGINA MONOLOGUES' SCHEDULED AT 43 CATHOLIC COLLEGES

About one of every five Catholic colleges in the United States is scheduled this year to present the vulgar play "Vagina Monologues", complete with a favorable reminiscence about a lesbian rape.

According to the organizers of the "V-Day College Campaign" - a marketing ploy that encourages campus showings of the play in the form of a fundraiser to help prevent violence against women - students and faculty at 656 colleges worldwide have requested the rights to present the play in February and March. They include 43 Catholic colleges, among them Boston College, Creighton University in Nebraska, DePaul University in Chicago,Fordham University in New York, Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., La Salle University in Philadelphia, Loyola University of Chicago, Saint Louis University, the University of Dayton in Ohio, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, and the University of San Francisco.

A complete list of participating Catholic colleges, as listed at http://www.vday.org, is below. The website also identifies 28 Catholic colleges that presented "Vagina Monologues" last year.

The play is a collection of monologues by women describing their personal stories, replete with vulgarity, frequent use of "vagina" to represent women and femininity, and explicit discussions of sexuality and sexual encounters including lesbian activity and masturbation. In one scene, a woman describes her lesbian, pedophile conquest of a 13-year-old-girl and proudly declares it "a good rape".

"This kind of vulgarity has no academic or social value to students at a Catholic college, and it's spiritually destructive," said Patrick Reilly, President of the Cardinal Newman Society, in a press release. "The play
is not being studied; it is being presented to students and faculty, usually with the full endorsement of college leaders or at least with the use of a Catholic college's name, facilities and funding. That is a clear conflict with Ex corde Ecclesiae and the Catholic college's promise to care for the spiritual development of its students."

Ex corde Ecclesiae is the 1990 apostolic constitution that provides general guidelines for colleges that carry the label "Catholic". The constitution requires that a Catholic college "informs and carries out its research, teaching, and all other activities with Catholic ideals,
principles and attitudes."

Students and alumni protested last year's showing of "Vagina Monologues" at the University of Notre Dame. The Notre Dame Society (http://www.notredamesociety.org) is planning again to protest this year's showing on March 3 and 4, just one day before Catholics begin to celebrate
Lent in preparation for Easter. The event is sponsored by Notre Dame's Program in Gender Studies and its Film, Television and Theatre Department.

The play will also be presented a second year at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. The college's president, Rev. Michael McFarland, S.J., announced this month's showing in November while
disparaging Holy Cross alumni who called last year's production "pornographic". The college is now threatening to sue the Holy Cross Cardinal Newman Society - not formally affiliated with the national Society - for using its alumni directory to encourage protests from other
graduates.

Sharon Sobotta, the new Sexual Assault Awareness Coordinator at St. Mary's College in Moraga, California, proudly told the Contra Costa Times in December that one of her first actions would be to organize a production of "Vagina Monologues" on February 14.

Georgetown University has been presenting "Vagina Monologues" since 1999, probably the longest run of the play at any Catholic college. Each production has generated an outcry from students and alumni. In 2000, a
campus newspaper censored a student's regular column that was critical of the play and subsequently fired him for objecting. Robert Swope, then a Georgetown senior, dared to complain about the production's sponsors, arguing that the event "exposes the [Georgetown] women's center for what
it really is: an indoctrination camp for lesbians and feminists".

Soon after complaining about last year's showing of "Vagina Monologues" at the University of San Francisco, Rev. Joseph Fessio, S.J. was reassigned by his Jesuit superiors to the chaplaincy of a small hospital in California. The action was widely seen as retaliation for Fessio's outspoken criticism of the university and his role in founding Campion
College, a two-year Catholic college nearby the University of San Francisco. Fessio has since become chancellor of the new Ave Maria University outside Naples, Florida.

At least one Catholic college this year has already taken a brave stand by banning the play. Warren Rosenberg, provost of Iona College in New Rochelle, New York, told students in December that "Vagina Monologues" was inconsistent with the college's "history, traditions and community composition".

Last year, the president of Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington banned the play from campus, but a university-recognized student group moved the production to a nearby hotel. "Vagina Monologues" is again banned from campus this year, an action applauded by Cardinal Newman
Society. But because the play will be presented at a nearby hotel by Gonzaga's Women's Studies Club, a university-recognized and university-funded student club, Gonzaga has not been removed from the list
of sponsoring colleges.

In 2001, after hearing numerous complaints about the previous year's production of "Vagina Monologues", the president of St. Mary's College in South Bend, Indiana insisted that students find a better play to help
raise awareness of women's issue - but the students rebelled with an on-campus reading of the play. St. Mary's is on V-Day's list of participating colleges this year.

CORRECTION: MLK LECTURE AT FAIRFIELD (CT)

Cardinal Newman Society regrets the following error in a January 24 "Catholic Higher Education Alert" article titled "Colleges Remember MLK, Some With Pro-Abortion Speakers".

Fairfield University honored Shirley Chisholm in 1999, not in 2003 as reported. An announcement about the event on Fairfield's website was mistakenly attributed to this year.

Instead, Fairfield observed the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on January 22, 2003 with a lecture by pro-abortion Dr. Manning Marable, professor of history and political science at Columbia University in New York.
Marable's activism as part of the Democratic Socialists of America and as an avowed Marxist has included efforts to ally African Americans with abortion rights and homosexual rights groups. He argues that the future of "democratic socialism" depends on organizing leftist activists in
support of minority rights, abortion, homosexual rights, and other causes. Marable's political action has included efforts in support of Ralph Nader's presidential aspirations, all the while apologizing for Nader's
weak support for abortion rights and homosexual rights. Marable used his newspaper column, "Along the Color Line", to argue against Clarence Thomas' nomination to the Supreme Court, chiding Thomas for opposing "a woman's freedom of choice on abortion".

BOSTON COLLEGE (MA) PRESIDENT CONSIDERING HOMOSEXUAL CLUB

Rev. William Leahy, S.J., president of Boston College (MA), is expected soon to announce whether the college will give formal recognition and funding to a homosexual student club. According to a proposal worked out during more than a year of talks with Leahy and Vice President for Student
Affairs Cheryl Presley, the Gay/Straight Alliance would have a special status independent of the student government and would report directly to the Dean for Student Development.

KENTUCKY REVERSES, ALLOWS AID TO RELIGION MAJORS

Pressured by a lawsuit filed by a Christian legal center, Kentucky officials reversed their decision to deny financial aid to a student at Cumberland College who chose to major in philosophy and religious studies. The state forbids funding to students who are enrolled in theology,
divinity or religious-education degree programs. According to the American Center for Law and Justice, founded by televangelist Pat Robertson, Kentucky has changed its policy and is allowing Cumberland College to release funds to other students majoring in philosophy and religion. But a state official denied any change in policy, stating that
Kentucky has simply determined that the student's course of study does not violate funding guidelines.

From what I understand there are only a few Universities out there that adhere to the Catholic Doctrines and don't fall for such shenanigans. Many use the excuse that since they are an institution of higher learning they have to show both sides, discuss the issue and let the student decide for themselves.

Fessio has since become chancellor of the new Ave Maria University outside Naples, Florida.

We became 'Founders' of this new University this year. I'm thrilled that there will be a new truly Catholic University in the country. Our daughter has expressed interest in it. She'll be graduating just in time for the new campus to be completed!

Isn't this a private, for profit Catholic University in FL?

I hope she gets in.

Coleus,

Thanks for all the work. This is just a disgrace. I wouldn't give one penny to any of those schools. I hope and pray that my kids will entertain a Catholic College, but one like the New Ave Maria in Florida - none in my area (Boston).

I'll start on the e-mails. And the prayers.

Boston College is (sadly) my alma mater. I've sent Fr. Leahy an email, but I doubt it'll do any good. That school is a football team with a university attached to it. Plus, as a Jesuit institution, they have become corrupt from top to bottom. It's sad.

Speaking from experience, don't let your kids anywhere near Boston College. I probably don't have to tell you this, but it's not a Catholic university. They take impressionable young Catholic youth and turn them into beer-swilling libertines--if you're lucky. If you're unlucky, you're child could come home a homosexual, a pagan, a man-hating feminist, an eco-wacko, mentally ill, or an alcoholic. I knew some of all of the above.

Basically, a BC liberal arts education does exactly the opposite of what it was originally intended to do. It takes well-adjusted Catholic youth and turns them into a deviants, freaks, and sleazebags. By the end, I was boycotting the senior week activites and avoiding my "friends" who wanted to drag me to the "orgies" that they hoped were going on.

If you must send them away to school (after my experiences, I don't think I'll do that either) consider Franciscan University of Steubenville.

Holy Cross, another Jesuit institution, has also ceased being Catholic. Check this out:

Coleus - this is nauseating. Do Catholic colleges stand for anything authentically Catholic? - Sitetest - you should read this post. This complete rejection of Catholic morality with regard to sexual matters by the heads of these colleges is part and parcel of the sickness which has infected the Church hierarchy in this country - and which has contributed mightily to the homosexual rape and molestation scandal. This play, due to be shown at scores of Catholic colleges actually promotes the lesbian rape of a teenage girl by an adult. And that's become par for the course at our Catholic colleges. I'd be truly afraid to send my daughter to one of these 'Catholic' colleges.

Antonius - someone should publish a list (undoubtedly short) of authentic Catholic colleges. I would be VERY interested in having such a list!

I think someone listed the colleges once before and there aren't too many of them around.

Who would ever think a Roman Catholic College would have such a club as a student activity.
