Archbishop choice seen as imminent: Pittsburgh's bishop called top candidate
Boston Globe ^ | June 8, 2003 | Walter V. Robinson and Michael Rezendes

The appointment of Boston's new archbishop is imminent, according to knowledgeable church officials, who said that Bishop Richard G. Lennon knows he is about to be replaced and the archdiocese has already identified at least three sites that may be used for the announcement.

In interviews last week, church officials said they believe that Pope John Paul II's choice to head the most troubled of American archdioceses is likely to be made public this month, with this Tuesday the earliest possible date.

And some church officials privy to internal discussions said they now believe that -- even if the decision has not been finalized -- the most likely choice is Bishop Donald W. Wuerl of Pittsburgh.

"Three abusive priests were fired by the new man after Myers left."

I'm really getting tired of this, sink. You have before falsely accused Myers and each time I've set the record straight. And each time you do this, you convince me more and more that you are operating with less than honorable motives.

In fact, the actual number of priests who have been withdrawn is around seven. However, with the exception of one case, all of these were instances Myers knew absolutely nothing about, the victims of these priests didn't come forward until AFTER Myers had already left. In the other case, the priest in question made a remark to two young men. Even the young men didn't consider it abuse, but they did tell their parents. When the parents reported it, the priest in question was moved to an administrative position in which, trust me, there was absolutely no way he would come into contact with kids.

I've gone over this with you a number of times. Now I'll speak bluntly -STOP LYING!

Retract Peoria. Meant Springfield, IL. Sorry.

As to Mke: Bert left a legacy of big problems. We will be paying the piper for many years. The clergy is at least 50% rotten, the nunneries are bastions of feminism, and the laity, by and large, have been re-educated to Methodism.

So it's a problem.

"It's a pretty fair gauge of a cleric to look at what he spends on himself."

Ah, sink, I can just here you berating the women for pouring out all that oil.

"Arlington, Virginia"

Arlington has had some pretty bad publicity lately. There are also some things going on there that have never made the news.

That "suitcase" living style--it's great. Orthodox Jewish tradition at one time also utilized by the Notre Dame nuns.

BTW, Bertie spent $900K remodeling an old dump on the Sem grounds for himself, which explains why it has a 3-man hot tub and CORYAN (!!!!) counters...

"O'Brien of the Armed Services"

Actually, I'd like to see him in a new post called "Supervisory Archbishop for North America," reporting directly to the excommunication desk at the Vatican.

A three "man" hot tub?

I can believe that.

I read or heard that Myers just built himself a brand new $600,000 residence.

A minor clarification from the trenches - Myers bought a home for $650,000 and then added an in ground swimming pool. I am sad to say that he has been seen hanging out with pro-choice "Catholic" governor of NJ, Jim McGreevey. I had high hopes for him, but actions speak louder than words...

"Supervisory Abp of N.A., horsehockey.

The new guy should be named "Successor to Torquemada" and have similar tooling in his building.

Mary Magdalen spent the money on Jesus; Myers spent the money on himself.

Conspicuous consumption by Catholic clerics is an embarrassment to all of us.

BTW, I recall that Cardinal John O'Connor lived in the rectory at St. Patrick's Cathedral.

America's top cleric lived like a common parish priest. That should be an example for all clerics.

Amen to that! I have been in the public part of the rectory at St. Patrick's. It is very nice, but at least O'Connor didn't frivolously spend diocesan funds on a bachelor pad.

Depending on the neighborhood, this could be a very modest home.

This is a very very bad sign. Once they become friendly with the enemy, generally it's all over as far as showing any courage on moral issues. They don't have to go over to the other side to become worthless. They just have to want to stay on good terms with the "powers that be" and they are already as good as corrupted.

The Arlington publicly reported news (Washington Post, Washington Times) is bad enough. Isn't Father Haley still out in limbo? What's pending -- liturgy problems or personnel problems, or both??

"and then added an in ground swimming pool"

What does he need a pool at his house for? As an excuse to invite young boys over?

He has a habit of vehemently denouncing (even to the point of "stretching the truth") any even partially conservative/traditional Catholic leader or opinion-maker who does the least thing which can be construed as wrong and going soft of the AmChurch guys. See, for example, his comments on Michael Rose, who he accused of being a liar before he even read the book. Told me all I needed to know about Mr. Sink.

See, for example, his comments on Michael Rose, who he accused of being a liar before he even read the book.

My intuition was correct.

Even after reading the book, Rose comes across as a sloppy journalist who presented one side of a story and made no effort to determine if, in fact, the other side had any merit. This was especially true in the Louvain case.

As for Myers, it strikes me as very coincidental that, within three months of his appointment, the new Bishop (Jurasek)(?) all of sudden discovers three serious abuse cases, that Myers denied any knowledge of. Four others surfaced shortly thereafter.

You may give him the benefit of the doubt if you wish.
