Archbishop choice seen as imminent: Pittsburgh's bishop called top candidate

The appointment of Boston's new archbishop is imminent, according to knowledgeable church officials, who said that Bishop Richard G. Lennon knows he is about to be replaced and the archdiocese has already identified at least three sites that may be used for the announcement.

In interviews last week, church officials said they believe that Pope John Paul II's choice to head the most troubled of American archdioceses is likely to be made public this month, with this Tuesday the earliest possible date.

And some church officials privy to internal discussions said they now believe that -- even if the decision has not been finalized -- the most likely choice is Bishop Donald W. Wuerl of Pittsburgh.

I can think of a few dioceses that are probably in trouble. I find it stunning that Mahoney is still in charge in LA and hasn't been sacked considering some of the things he said. Three friends of mine and myself were driving down Friday for a Latin Mass in downtown Chicago, and we couldn't help but talk about Mahoney as an enemy of the Tridetine, but also an enemy of basic Church teaching. Boston might be a troubled diocese, but LA is run by someone of questionable merits. God Bless

I'm at the point where I don't think anyone has the guts to remove Mahony. He reminds me of Gray Davis. He probably has so many people blackmailed and vulnerable that they are more afraid of him than loyal to whoever requests his removal.

I hope Boston gets O'Brien of the Armed Services actually. He'd be very good for them. But there aren't very many willing to take the armed services spot and he volunteered for it.

I'm surprised you listed these two. My understanding was that you're very happy with the new bishop of Milwaukee. Is this incorrect? Or maybe the problems run deeper than the bishop? Peoria had the good bishop who is now in Newark, right? So is the new guy bad? But you'd hope that Myers would have straightened out the diocese to some extent while he was there.

Also, I read or heard that Myers just built himself a brand new $600,000 residence.

Why are representatives of the One who had nowhere to lay His Head still living like royalty? My own bishop lives in a rented house and can put everything he owns in the trunk of his car.

This is disappointing. I have been accepting it on faith that Myers is one of the good guys. Regarding the $600,000 house, are you sure you're not thinking about the new bishop on Long Island? That was certainly a scandal where he sold the moderate-size suburban home and spent millions to kick some nuns out of a huge old convent and convert it into a episcopal palace complete with temperature-controlled wine cellar, jacuzzi, etc.

That was certainly a scandal where he sold the moderate-size suburban home and spent millions to kick some nuns out of a huge old convent and convert it into a episcopal palace complete with temperature-controlled wine cellar, jacuzzi, etc.

That's Bishop Murphy, and Bill O'Reilly took off after him last Wednesday. As I recall, O'Reilly said the renovation cost well over a million dollars. And, he mentioned that Archbishop Myers had spent $600,000 on a new house (but I've read about that somewhere else, too).

It's a pretty fair gauge of a cleric to look at what he spends on himself. I knew an old Monsignor back in the '70s in North Dallas who spent parish money at the race track (and he had to travel to these racetracks because there weren't any in Texas at the time). If he won anything, he'd split the winnings with the parish!
