Every year, the sharpest legal minds in the LGBT community gather at Lavender Law, the annual conference of the National Lesbian and Gay Law Association (NLGLA) and the National Lesbian and Gay Law Foundation (NLGLF). More than 500 practicing attorneys and law professors and 200 law students are expected to attend Lavender Law 2003 in New York City, October 17-19, at Fordham University School of Law, 140 W. 62nd St., in Lincoln Center. This year's conference features dozens of panels, symposia, courses, and full plenary sessions on cutting-edge legal issues affecting LGBT individuals and the community.
The Lavender Law Programming Committee has invited the country's leading lawyers to head discussions and strategy sessions on practical litigation skills, sodomy law developments, will drafting and estate planning, employment discrimination, workplace diversity, domestic violence, transgender issues, career development, LGBT in academia, civil rights, HIV and AIDS, immigration law, the military, legislation updates, family law, LGBT youth and much more! Numerous opportunities for Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits are available at Lavender Law. Most sessions are CLE-eligible, and accreditation will be requested from all states which require continuing legal education. Lavender Law features a Career Fair, an exciting opportunity for conference participants to network and obtain jobs as attorneys and summer associates/interns with employers from all over the country. The total collapse of anything resembling "moral authority" has happened in the American Church. Two of three hierarchs have either committed sexual crimes or covered them up in a fashion that has to be called criminally culpable. Now this, together with the odius sex ed curriculum used in too many "catholic" schools. I wonder, where is the self proclaimed Deacon from Dallas on this one?

I think it entered quite some time ago. When my daughter was checking out religious orders, the Daughters of St. Paul promised her an education at Fordham.
For my daughter, that was a big red flag.

Bishop Eagan knows. He does not care. It would be politically incorrect to get involved and he has the courage of a bishop(none).

That is Edward Cardinal Eagan. He has no jurisdiction over Fordham because the Jesuits are subject only to their superior general (Hans Pieter Kolvenbach, a verrrrry bad guy) in Rome at the Gesu and to the pope. The pope is busy as a one-armed paperhanger with this stuff and is no physically up to combat with the Jebbies any more. Eagan, however, is not silenced regarding the Jesuits and certainly ought to apply a verbal flamethrower to Fordham for these scandalous doings. If the next pope is young, healthy, orthodox and determined, the Jesuits will finally be dealt with and Kolvenbach will be exiled and the order will comply or be punished or even suppressed.

The local bishop has control over any organization that is "Catholic" in his diocese, whether it's a hospital, school, college, etc. Every priest, including religious, in His diocese MUST report to and obey the local church authority, the bishop.

Wheeling Jesuit University, in 2000, had Janet Reno as their commencement speaker. I don't think ANY Jesuit college in the U.S. has failed to invite pro-aborts for honorary degrees and as commencement speakers. This fact alone should have resulted in the suppression of the Society of Jesus years ago. They have become a pro-abortion organization, plain and simple. The good-ol'-boys who have appointed each other as superiors and provincials, and who have well-documented, public records as promoters of abortion, should be laicized, and the good, Catholic Jesuits should be allowed to reorganize the Society.

Unless something has drastically changed since I graduated a Jesuit prep school in the mid-1960s, the Jesuits are exempt from control by local bishops. It might be necessary for them to obtain the approval of the local ordinary and a mandatum to call themselves theologians within his diocese inder Ex Corde Ecclesiae but that is it. I also believe that Opus Dei has similar exemption. Both are "personal prelatures of the papacy."

Narses,you know I agree with you on most things Catholic and appreciate your posts. But I think you are exaggerating the number of bad bishops and it's time we start figuring out what defines a bad bishop and how many they are and who they are. Painting all bishops with the same brush is even more harmful than denying that the problem exists.

I would except from my list any bishops that I am not sure about,this would start the beginnings of a list that is composed of the evil shepherds. Moving priests around once they committed a legitimate,defined crime or sin more than once is a sign,withholding info about the types of abuse that is occurring is another,ordaining clearly homosexual priests is another,not insisting that priests talk about sexual sins including active homosexuality,once a year is another.The kind of catechesis they offer should be rviewed,the liturgical license they permit is another,the lack of indults,removing the altar rails,desacralizing the churches and on and on.All of these abuses go hand in hand with the planned destruction of the Catholic Church from within.

It is very wrong to hold a bishop accountible for protecting priests when it surfaces long after the fact that a predessessor bishop had "taken"care of it.Anew bishop would be at the mercy of the chancery staff if he came in,asked if there were any problem priests and was told there were no problems only to be told at a much later date that there had been. If we want to clean up the Church we must be very careful with the statements we throw out as True.I think the number of bad bishops is much closer to ten to fifteen per cent.We have got to start developing a factual profile or we may destroy the good and be left with nothing but the ilk of the bad ones like Mahoney and Pilarchyc,Clark and Imesch and Pilla and Hubbard and Lynch and the rest of the evil ones.If I am wrong about any that I have named please let me know contrary information,I only look at a complex of symptoms since I can't know the mind of the bishop. But I do suspect if they don't think with the mind of the Church they are worthless.

Expect to hear from the Newman Society and the ASCC, in short time, on this one.

On the brighter side, perhaps it would be good to know that the Eucharistic Adoration movement on college campuses is now "coming out".

Regarding your comment regarding developing a factual profile -- my take would be something like this:

- Do they cause confussion by either directly supporting or supporting by their absense of comment those public individuals or organizations that promote ideas which are opposed to Catholic teaching?

- Do they offer means for more traditional Catholics or those Catholics seeking a more sacred form of worship opportunities to express themselves?

- Are their seminary graduating classes decreasing in number of graduates?

Feel free to add to the list but I think it should be a short list of key "tests".
