Larry Lepard, a venture capitalist and Ron Paul supporter from Massachusetts, has shelled out about $85,000 of his own money to throw what he told U.S. News is a "small hard rock at a good target": a full-page ad supporting Paul that will run in tomorrow's edition of USA Today—the nation's largest circulation daily newspaper—on the busiest travel day of the year.
He noted that he bought a right-hand position in the newspaper's front section.
"I'm trying to get maximum bang for the buck," said Lepard, 50, a Republican who says his strong opposition to the Iraq war drove him to take out the ad. His firm, Equity Management Association, invests in emerging markets, he said, adding, "I'm good at spotting early trends." The ad, presented as an open letter from the country's Founding Fathers, was designed with the help of supporters on www.RonPaulForums.com, where Paul campaign activists hold their virtual gatherings.
"We think the message is beautiful and pure," said Lepard, who first met Paul nearly two decades ago at an economic conference in New York. "He's not the odds-on favorite, but people have come from relative obscurity before and done it."

Both Paul and Huckabee are surging in the polls. In each case, this is a good thing. Huck has a good chance of taking down Romney. As Thompson falls in the polls, Paul will increasingly be the most viable limited government choice.
I’m afraid that ad is too much for the “thinker”. I’m not sure most people will really take the time to read and understand it. On the other hand, they are taking the time to read a newspaper in the first place.
I can’t find the point (in the ad) about Paul saying that 9/11 was our fault.
Why is that?

Another advantage of Huck’s rise for Paul is that Romney will have to divert resources from New Hampshire (a state where Paul is especially strong).
No...the guy who said 911 was our fault was Pat Robertson and he is supporting Rudy (who proudly embraces this support).
That’s actually a very well made ad. Too bad that Ron Paul thinks he’s worthy company of those great men, though.
Where’s the part about how Ron Paul thinks we should let terrorists strike first with a nuclear weapon? Or let tens of thousands die from a nerve gas strike?

Great advert. The least I hope for is that this sort of grassroots activity will help popularize the concepts of liberty and limited government.
Anyone who thinks that islamic fascism isn’t a threat to national security and needs to be confronted by our Military forces is a fool. Thomas Jefferson certainly confronted it and he was one of the “Founding Fathers” Ron Paul likes to bring up all the time.
Please help me follow your reasoning: you are cheering a Big Government “conservative’s” (Huckabee) rise in the polls because it makes your Small Government candidate more attractive?
Hmmmm......Rudy’s guy says it was our fault because we are sinners. Rudy blames it on specific bad guys. I think Paul has a better explanation.
Huckabee scares me even more than Romney, I’m loosing more and more respect for so-called ‘evangelical’ ‘social conservative’ voters; they’d apparently destroy the economy and advance socialism just cuz someone was once a minister and is strong on social issues.
That would be a good start.

But as far as a political strategy, yea what you say may hold true, I don’t know. The race is completely up in the air at this point I think.
A simple matter of math. Huck's rise further splits the base of the pro-war candidates, and to a lesser extent, anti-liberty candidates. This leaves Paul alone as a uniquely different choice. A fragmented field provides the best opportunity for Paul to get coverage and serious attention because it makes it more difficult for the media and voters to dismiss him as bottom tier. It is now almost impossible to cut him out of the debates on that rationale.
Because Paul is leading Thompson and/or is tied with with McCain in several states, he increasingly has claim to the top tier. In fact, now the only truly bottom tier candidates are Tancredo and Hunter.
