Foot soldiers for the Ron Paul revolution (LAT)
LA Times ^ | 12/1/07 | James Rainey

Posted on 12/01/2007 2:42:14 PM PST by traviskicks

The freewheeling tactics of his supporters have made the GOP candidate an Internet sensation and an unlikely phenomenon.

The late-fall night fairly crackled with energy -- from a persistent Santa Ana wind, the high-tension power lines overhead and, especially, from the crowd packed inside the living room of a ranch house at the west end of the San Gabriel Valley.

Eighty people sat elbow to elbow on tight rows of folding chairs, chattering with enthusiasm and ideas. They would produce wall calendars and a concert. They would reenact the Boston Tea Party on the Santa Monica Pier. They would write to every independent voter in Iowa.

The foot soldiers of the Ron Paul Revolution, Pasadena Division, were only getting started.

Founded nine months ago by one of the first followers of the Texas congressman and Republican presidential candidate, the Pasadena "meetup" spawned more than 1,200 similar groups that claim nearly 77,000 members nationwide.

These fervent supporters and their freewheeling tactics have helped turn Paul into, first, an Internet sensation and, now, this political season's most unlikely phenomenon.

A 45-year-old artist and adventurer is bicycling from Santa Monica to the Jefferson Memorial in Washington to raise awareness about Paul. A Nevada brothel owner recently promised to take up a collection from her customers. One Colorado backer quickly raised more than $350,000 online this week, with a plan to launch a Ron Paul blimp.

"It's bigger than one. It's bigger than a group," Juliet Annerino, a Silver Lake fitness trainer and singer, said at the recent gathering of the Pasadena group. "We are making history right now. Right here."

Paulites tend to be tech-savvy, tired of traditional politics and suspicious of their government and the mainstream media.

How many terrorist attacks have been carried out in the U.S. by al Qaeda since 9/11?

So? How many were carried out in the U.S. before 9/11?

How many people have al Qaeda been responsible for killing before 9/11 and then after 9/11?

If Paul had been president, we never would have invaded Iraq and it would now be a major base for bin laden.

And you know this because . . . ? That doesn't follow since Iraq was not a major base for bin Ladin before 9/11. There's no reason to suppose that it would have become one after 9/11.

Paul would have relied on privateers to go after bin laden . . .

You mean privateers like the ones we are currently using from Blackwater, Inc.?

I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say that one or more of our major cities would have been nuked by now if things had been left in the hands of a president Paul.

I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say you have been scared witless by a group of people that make the Amish look technologically advanced.

If you and the rest of Paulites want change then you'll have to do it through our political system. If not, then you're nothing but criminals, if not terrorists, depending on how far you are foolish enough to take your little revolution.

LOL. So let's see if I got this straight. I purchase tea. I, and a group of other like minded individuals (not a small group mind you), choose to re-enact a famous historical event because we feel the nation is do a 'revolution' from the two party political system that has not only failed us but the vision of the Framers. And we're criminals and now possibly even 'terrorists' (although I can't see how even the most delusional individual could come up with that).

I was wrong, you wouldn't have made a good Tory. I don't think even they were that much of a tool. So much for the intent of the First Amendment. I suppose you think it only applies if one supports the government...

Heh, maybe they can coin a new term, “tearrorists.”

It’s amazing how many statists are running around trying to sound conservative these days.

All you have to do is visit a local Ron Paul meetup group of the over 1000 that exist across the land to see the great diversity of people attending for just as many different reasons to support Dr. Paul. And they are there not merely for the man, but for the cause. The cause is a humble moving of Americans in the classic sense of independence and liberty. The average American knows the country is sick and has lost its liberty, virtue, and reputation, and has been sold out to the highest bidder. The average American feels that these are desperate times and that there is need for fundamental change. What Dr. Paul has done is to remind us of history—remind us of our great heritage.

We have no country without the Constitution and if you don't fight for the only candidate who protects and defends the Constitution you're fighting for the wrong side.

Amen.

There are already plans to secure Pak’s nukes if the worst does come to pass.

Like what-bombing them?

When are you guys going to realize that the United States is not omnipotent?

So what do you guys think Ron paul will do concerning the WOT and national defense? Do you think bounties are sufficient or would you rather he be more committed to ending iraq and afghanistan responsibly, instead of rushing to the exit?

I think Ron Paul will handle Defense the way it ought to be handled, by defending the United States and not having our forces scattered in over 100 nations.

Let each region deal with their own problems and let the United States protect its own vital interests instead of thinking it can dictate to every region in the world-it cannot.

We should be building a missle defense system for this nation, not NATO.

We need to secure our own borders, not the borders of other nations.

Ron Paul's view of defense would leave the United States stronger, not weaker.

A vote for Ron Paul is a vote against America.

Care to be more specific?

How is a vote for constitutional government a vote against America?

Dude, we've been there for six years...you call that rushing to the exit?

In case the anti-withdrawel guys haven't noticed, Bush has started to withdraw troops.

I guess he must be 'cut and running'.

I was voting for hillary here tongue in cheek. Thank God that won't be needed.

And which of the 'business as usual' GOP candidates are you supporting?

The difference between the Colonial Revolutionaries and Americans today is that the former had no representation in government while the latter do. If you and the rest of Paulites want change then you'll have to do it through our political system.

And that is what we are attempting to do, so what is your beef?

Idon't think it's too much of a stretch to say you have been scared witless by a group of people that make the Amish look technologically advanced.

Amen!

The terrorist's goal is to spread fear, and judging by many of the posts, they have succceded very well.

They worry about terrorist attacks, but it was the failures of the U.S. government that allowed 9/11 to happen in the first place, since most of those terrorists were wandering around the country with expired student visas.

Nor, have these failures been dealt with.

Our borders have not been secured.

Our pilots are still not armed.
